Robin Good's curator insight, September 22, 2013 4:37 PM

Pugmarks is a Chrome web extension which allows you to get in-context references and complementary reading suggestions to any web page you are viewing.

Pugmarks leverages your network of Twitter, LinkedIN and an optional set of RSS feeds (which you must provide in OPML format) to filter and select the most relevant reading resources that it will suggest to you.

When you are on any web page you can click the Pugmarks footprint icon on the Chrome browser extension bar and a strip of relevant information is displayed over the top (or bottom) of your screen.

The extension can be paused and the user has the option to select whether to see the Pugmarks bar appear on top or on the bottom of his browser screen.

When you open a new empty tab Pugmarks suggests relevant content items to check out.

My comment: Useful to find additional, relevant content resources just-in-time, as you browse.

Free to use.

Learning is the work | Harold Jarche | Maximizing Business Value | Scoop.it

"...automation is replacing most routine work. That leaves customized work, which requires initiative, creativity and passion. Valued work, and the environments in which it takes place, is becoming more complex. Professionals today are doing work that cannot be easily standardized.

"In complexity, we can determine the relationship between cause and effect only in retrospect. Think about that. It puts into question most of our management frameworks that require detailed analysis before we take action. It also shows that identifying and copying best practices is pretty well useless.

"In complex work environments, the optimal way to do work is to constantly probe the environment and test emergent practices. This requires an engaged and empowered workforce. Emergent practices are dependent on the cooperation of all workers (and management) as well as the free flow of knowledge.

"Work in complex situations requires a greater percentage of implicit knowledge, which cannot be easily codified. Research shows that sharing complex knowledge requires strong interpersonal relationships. But discovering innovative ideas usually comes through loose social ties. Organizations need both, and communities of practice can help to connect tight work teams with loose social networks. Communities of practice can provide a safe space for professionals to challenge each other at the cutting edge of their expertise.

"Effective organizational knowledge-sharing for this new world of work needs individuals who are adept at sense-making. One framework for this is personal knowledge management."

Harold Jarche make the point of loose -tight structure and customization, dependent on open, sharing environments.  Curation, such as these newsletters on ScoopIt, is a type of personal knowledge management.

Other posts shared in this stream offer the types of open networks and giving, learning, helping environments that can create the needed loose - tight structures for learning.    ~  D

  • WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

    The  key factors are: Learners’ age, back ground knowledge, the purpose of learning, the learners’ circumstances (employed, students, unemployed, etc…)

  • DO YOU HAVE THE COURSE CURRICULUM?

    In many cases the course curriculum does exist, for example: National Curriculum, University course modules , In-house corporate training.

  • WHAT EXTERNAL PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS NEED TO BE MET?

    All external examination bodies provide an exam guide or syllabus which you have to insure your course will address them.

  • WHAT IS THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT?

    Would your learners attend any face to face classes? Do they access their course from home, work, or college? Do they work as a group or individuals?

Why Content Curation and Crowdsourcing Will Change Everything

Why Content Curation and Crowdsourcing Will Change Everything | Maximizing Business Value | Scoop.it

From the original article by Tom George on his "Internet Billboards".
Here are some interesting excerpts from the post about content curation.
"After having spent the better part of four years curating content from renowned bloggers, journalists and authors as well as building a platform here on Internet Billboards, which has evolved into a wonderful community of content curator’s.

Here is my definition of content curation. A content curator is someone who finds, organizes, presents and shares valuable information (content) in many forms, on a specific topic, in a way that provides special context and or a unique engagement with his or her readers. In actuality when done correctly, over time it positions the curator as an expert in his or her respective field and defines their reputation as a thought leader.

A good curator will mix curation with his or her own original content, to give interpretations for the express purpose of allowing others to form their own conclusions.
...
Why curation and crowdsourcing will and should become more important to you. I will give you ten reasons.
1. There is just too much content;
2. Social Sites Are Full Of Spam;
3. Privacy concerns with big data;
4. Limiting risk and using many minds;
5. Technology must assist us and help us not hinder us;
6. People Will recognize the need to build meaningful relationships;
7. Information will flow freely;
8. Trust and authority will be the new currency;
9. Curation helps you establish relationships with thought leaders;
10. Crowd Sourcing can make things possible..."

The article is discussed with more information. Read full original post here:
