Shalva serves the abused in the area's Jewish community

Despite her husband’s threats, her torn clothes and broken furniture around the house, no one in the family talked about the domestic violence taking place in their North Shore home.

“Everyone kept quiet,’’ says the woman, 45, who suffered years of abuse at the hands of her husband.

That silence is common in the Jewish community, where women often fear no one wants to hear their complaints, according to a study released recently by Shalva, a local social service agency where the woman turned for help.

- Southtown Star

A quiet student at a Chicago middle school silently dealt with older boys calling him names and cutting him down. He put up with their comments, but one day he had enough.

“He decided to fix things himself,” said Sandra Guzman, a counselor with Youth Outreach Services.

He grabbed one bully by the shirt to choke him and a fight broke out, but when it was broken up he began violently throwing chairs, Guzman said.

The bullies were suspended. The victim expelled.

Fairfax High May Lose Beloved Music Director | Park Labrea News/ Beverly Press | MattWilhalme | Scoop.it

Outside Ray Vizcarra’s Fairfax High School classroom door, you can hear the school band playing.

“‘Ran Kan Kan’ by Tito Puente,” the band director said, identifying the song as the band played without its leader.

But for Vizcarra, and many other art, music and theatre teachers in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), the image is sadly fitting. Of the 3,400 reduction in force (RIF) notices to be rescinded because of a deal struck with the teachers unions, his will not be one of them.
