A year in review: Search Engine Land’s top 10 columns of 2017

A year in review: Search Engine Land’s top 10 columns of 2017 | Top Tech News | Scoop.it
Another year is coming to a close, and search marketers of all stripes have had their work cut out for them over the last 12 months as the industry grappled with everything from fake news to mysterious algorithm updates to automation. Fortunately, our talented contributors were at the ready, helping our readers to navigate the shifting sands of the search marketing landscape. Local had a strong showing in our top columns this year, as pieces with a local search focus accounted for three of the top 10 columns on Search Engine Land. These ranged from Joy Hawkins’s detailed account of the Google Hawk update to Wesley Young’s helpful tips on how to improve your Google My Business listing. Top honors went to Sherry Bonelli for her comprehensive piece on how to rank well in YouTube’s search results. As digital video consumption continues to rise, brands are looking to take advantage of this trend by producing high-quality — and properly optimized — video content. New test prominently showcases Google Express in mobile search results

New test prominently showcases Google Express in mobile search results | Top Tech News | Scoop.it
Image: Google This week, we spotted a new treatment for Google Express in the search results. This included two new elements: a promotion for the program at the top of the results and a new look for Google Express ads in the Shopping carousel. The “Get it with Google Express” promotion at the very top of the results, just below the navigation, touts the program’s easy checkout and free delivery. The Google Express Shopping ad features the program logo and displays the participating retailer name — in this case, Walmart — selling the product showcased in the ad. These changes combine to make the Google Express program much more prominent on the page. Google typically displays these ads with “Google Express” in place of the retailer name and “Free shipping” in the promotion area of the ad. Here are examples of these ads in a Knowledge Panel and a regular Shopping carousel: The test is quite limited. It’s running on mobile only in the US when it regards the offer to be particularly re.. http://topseosoft.com/new-test-prominently-showcases-google-express-in-mobile-search-results/

5 (less obvious) PPC trends to watch in 2018

5 (less obvious) PPC trends to watch in 2018 | Top Tech News | Scoop.it
In closing out our big recap of all the big 2017 trends and changes in PPC, I predict we’ll see trends in artificial intelligence, audience targeting, attribution and local marketing continue to develop in 2018. Those are all exciting areas, but that’s not a particularly earth-shattering prediction. Here is a look at five trends that are related but slightly askew from the major themes that will play out in paid search over the coming year. 1. Structured data will matter even more It’s not just for SEO, and I suspect we’ll be talking about structured data much more on the ads side in 2018. Cindy Krum makes the case in her (must-read) column on mobile SEO predictions for 2018 that structured data will become a bigger factor in the year ahead as the mobile-first index rolls out. Krum primarily discusses Schema markup, but advertisers also provide files of structured data via product feeds in Merchant Center and Business data feeds in AdWords. Google again showing third-party reviews in local results

Google again showing third-party reviews in local results | Top Tech News | Scoop.it
Google is integrating third-party reviews into the Knowledge Graph for hotels. It apparently has been happening since 2016 and is entirely opt-in for the provider. Google works directly with the third-party review source (e.g., TripAdvisor) to integrate the content. In the example below, TripAdvisor reviews for Southern California hotel Terranea are available under the “view Google reviews” link in the Knowledge Panel. Google got into trouble roughly seven years ago for “scraping” and incorporating third-party review content from sites like TripAdvisor and Yelp into Google Places without permission. Yelp saw the move as a kind of antitrust “extortion” and mounted a vigorous campaign against it. One of the provisions of Google’s 2012 antitrust settlement with the FTC was that the company would allow publishers to block Google from including third-party reviews in “vertical search offerings” without their being excluded from the general index. PPC insights: Our top SEM columns of 2017

PPC insights: Our top SEM columns of 2017 | Top Tech News | Scoop.it
Though paid search has long since cemented its place as a pillar of digital marketing, changes in technology and consumer behavior have continued to reshape the PPC landscape and keep search marketers on their toes. In 2017, we saw the last of “standard” text ads in AdWords as expanded text ads, introduced in 2016, became the new norm. We also said goodbye to the literal definition of “exact” as Google expanded exact match targeting to include close variants. Yet, on the whole, search marketers spent more of 2017 looking forward than dwelling on the past. Two of our most widely-read columns, penned by former Googler Frederick Vallaeys, were forward-thinking pieces that focused on how artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are driving innovation and automation in paid search. This past year also saw a host of new feature releases, and with new capabilities comes the need to try new things — which is why so many of our top columns this year focused on testing. What to watch for in 2018: Mobile SEO predictions

What to watch for in 2018: Mobile SEO predictions | Top Tech News | Scoop.it
As we wrap up 2017 and look forward to 2018, many SEOs will speculate about what to expect in the year to come. Since my focus is mobile, I wanted to share my unique expectations for 2018 by outlining what we know and what we suspect on the mobile SEO front. This past year brought a lot of changes to the mobile ecosystem, though we are still waiting expectantly for the launch of Google’s mobile-first index. We have been assured that it will launch sometime in 2018, and we hope this is true. For this article, I plan to focus on a few of my key predictions for 2018: the blurring of the lines between app and web, cross-device convergence and the increased reliance on schema markup in HTML, JSON and databases. I will then tie all the trends together with unique speculation about what mobile-first indexing will actually be and what strategies you can start incorporating now to create an immediate SEO benefit. Using AdWords API to export to third-party ad networks will remain OK as Google keeps terms it adopted in FTC settlement

Using AdWords API to export to third-party ad networks will remain OK as Google keeps terms it adopted in FTC settlement | Top Tech News | Scoop.it
Though the part of Google’s antitrust settlement with the Federal Trade Commission that had them allow exports of AdWords data through its API expires tomorrow, Matthew Sucherman, Google’s VP and deputy general counsel, announced today that Google will keep the AdWords API terms and conditions as they are currently. That means Google will continue to allow software that interfaces with its API to export AdWords campaign and ad data, so users will be able to continue mixing that data with other information and integrating it into other ad networks, such as Bing Ads. “We believe that these policies provide continued flexibility for developers and websites, and we will be continuing our current practices regarding the AdWords API Terms and Conditions and the domain-by-domain opt-out following the expiration of the voluntary commitments,” Sucherman said. Google explained that this requirement expires tomorrow, December 27, 2017, but they have decided internally to keep the terms and con.. http://topseosoft.com/using-adwords-api-to-export-to-third-party-ad-networks-will-remain-ok-as-google-keeps-terms-it-adopted-in-ftc-settlement/

Mind your business: Our top local search columns of 2017 | Top Tech News | Scoop.it
Local SEO practitioners have an increasingly important role to play in the digital marketing mix as searches with local intent continue to grow at a fast pace — particularly on mobile devices. Google has responded to this shift in consumer behavior accordingly, releasing several updates in 2017 that have allowed business owners to enhance their local listings. This year, our readers seemed especially interested in learning more about new Google My Business features, particularly Google Posts, Questions and Answers and the new website builder. This interest may reflect increased competition for a limited number of spots in the local pack: When all of your local competitors have the basics down, utilizing new and advanced features is a great way to make your business listing stand out. Although articles about Google dominated the top local search columns this year, there was one notable exception, by Local Search Association’s Wesley Young, that focused on how Facebook is solidifying i.. http://topseosoft.com/mind-your-business-our-top-local-search-columns-of-2017/

December global festivities Google doodle marks day 2 of Google’s holiday doodle series

December global festivities Google doodle marks day 2 of Google’s holiday doodle series | Top Tech News | Scoop.it
Today’s Christmas holiday marks day two of Google’s 2017 holiday doodle series. After posting the first of the series on December 18, Google has added two new images to the slide show for today’s doodle. “Our favorite penguins couldn’t be more excited to reunite with their loved ones. Happy to be together for the season of cheer, this colorfully feathered family can’t wait to sink their beaks into a delicious feast,” writes Google on the Google Doodle blog. While the December 18 doodle included an image of the penguins making plans over the phone with their bird friends, today’s doodle has replaced that image with the following artwork of the penguins and birds together: The doodle has also added the following image of all the friends sharing a dinner surrounded by lighted palm trees: Same as the first doodle, today’s image leads to a search for “December global festivities.” Going off the last image in the slide show that lists the holiday doodle series dates, there are two mo.. http://topseosoft.com/december-global-festivities-google-doodle-marks-day-2-of-googles-holiday-doodle-series/

Google tests ‘more results’ mobile search interface and new search refinement buttons | Top Tech News | Scoop.it
Google has confirmed it is testing a new mobile search interface and a new search refinement button. The new search interface shows fewer search results on the mobile search results page, with the option to click on a button labeled “more results.” In addition, Google is testing showing buttons to refine your search directly in the search results snippets. A Google spokesperson told us “We constantly experiment with new search formats and experiences to deliver the best experience for our users.” Dan Brackett shared screen shots with us on Twitter, but many others are noticing these new tests. ‘More results’ feature on Google mobile search Here is a screen shot showing the “more results” link, often Google is showing as few as two or three organic search results on this page. The AdWords 2x budget change: How’s it going?

The AdWords 2x budget change: How’s it going? | Top Tech News | Scoop.it
When Google announced that campaign daily budgets could spend up to double their setting, some shrugged and others thought it could cause real problems. A few weeks ago, I asked people on Twitter if they had been impacted by the change and checked in with others who said they’d had issues. It was a mixed bag. Many have had no issues at all. Others, well, it hasn’t been all roses. Here’s what I heard. First, some of the good to neutral responses. “Just like the previous 20 percent incarnation, this has produced no issues (210 accounts in our MCC). It all evens out just fine,” said Brett Dixon, director of DPOM. His agency hasn’t seen any negative impact from the change. Dixon added that some accounts use third-party bid and budget management tools “so that may help with pacing,” but overall he has seen no problems. Giacomo Iotti says the couple of budget overspends he’s seen in accounts yielded good returns, which of course is the ultimate good. Google & NORAD Santa Trackers show St. Nick already in flight for his 2017 trip around the world

Google & NORAD Santa Trackers show St. Nick already in flight for his 2017 trip around the world | Top Tech News | Scoop.it
It’s Christmas Eve in North America, but on the other side of the globe, Santa has already started his 2017 Christmas trip around the world to deliver gifts. According to both Google’s Santa Tracker and NORAD’s Santa Tracker, Santa is approximately 14 hours from making his away to North America and has already delivered more than a million gifts. NORAD (the North American Aerospace Defense Command) has been tracking Santa’s whereabouts since 1955 when a Sear’s department store ad mistakenly printed the phone number to NORAD’s headquarters as a hotline to find Santa. The military organization took up the call, and has been following through on the tradition ever since. Google launched its first Santa Tracker in 2004 using Google Earth. In 2007, Google partnered with NORAD to track Santa, but then in 2012, Google went back to tracking Santa on its own and NORAD partnered with Microsoft.
