Pros and Cons of BYOD and School Supplied Mobile Devices

With educational budgets ever tighter, and with a large percentage of students already toting their own smart phones, tablets, and laptops, more institutions are considering the bring-your-own-device, or "BYOD," approach to mobile classroom technology.

But there are pros and cons to both BYOD and school-supplied strategies. Handing out specific devices allows IT departments to standardize the mobile rollouts and provide a predictable level of support across all devices. But the rollouts can get expensive--an issue that the BYOD approach solves by allowing students to purchase and use their own equipment.

Teaching With Tablets | Inside Higher Ed

Teaching With Tablets | Inside Higher Ed | Marius' report on Educational Technology | Scoop.it

I bought it this summer, and it’s still new enough that sometimes I just sit there, stroking the burnished metal of the back, and marveling about how neat it is to live in the future. One of the most awesome things about this tech, for me, is the fundamental ways it has infiltrated my teaching style. When I teach, I use my iPad pretty exclusively, from lesson planning to classroom management to grading, and it has done a serious number on the way I think about being a teacher in the dawning age of ubiquitous digital technology. This post offers a brief defense for teaching with tablet technology and hacks for getting the most out of your tablets as an instructor.

There are several free web tools that teachers can use to gather feedback from their students both formally and informally. You can also use these tools to poll your students about a learning event, assess their level of comprehension, or simply to get to know their opinions about a certain topic. Educational Technology and Mobile Learning has already posted a list of such tools last year but today we are updating this list deleting the ones that no longer work and including new ones .

Assessment Matters

Assessment is the primary force that shapes what and how our students will learn. It is the means by which we, as academics, teachers and educators, judge students' achievements; and ultimately forms the basis by which we award a qualification. It matters because if we get it wrong, it can be catastrophic for the lives and careers of our students.
