The Severity of California's Terrible Drought, in One Image

The Severity of California's Terrible Drought, in One Image | March Utah Geographic Alliance Newsletter | Scoop.it
“After months of extremely dry weather, a Sacramento-area lake has pulled a massive disappearing act.”California just suffered its driest year in 119 years, and the horrid drought that's plaguing the state (and much of the American West) still shows no sign of relaxing its withering grip. But how bad is it, really?Well, it's so dry that "grass-fed beef" is becoming "grain-fed beef," as ranchers can't find any grass to feed their cattle. Things are so parched that the state's municipal water system has announced it can't get water to many farmers. That's a first in its 54-year history, and not a good omen for the state that produces half of America's vegetables and fruits.
Via Seth Dixon
Utah Geographical Alliance's insight:
This could have very far implications, as all of the western U.S. Struggles with this problem.

“ America's educational attainment, mapped. ”
Via Crooms Human Geography
Utah Geographical Alliance's insight:
High school graduation seems so basic today. In our class discussions about minimum wage the question many students have is whether you should even make minimum wage if you drop out of high school. My students believe that essentially if we then were paying people directly to finish high school more would do so. Probably true but is there a better sollution. It was a very lively discussion asking my students for one.

Thank you Mr. Hill's geography for the link. This allows your students to touch the screen and interactively play with and choose the data they want to look to at which I have found important in keeping them interested in a topic. Interactives of any kind are good for this but this one uniquely points out how differently women are treated based on where they live. It could be eye opening for some students to realize.
