Disquietin'Goose's insight:

In Material Politics, author Andrew Barry reveals that as we are beginning to attend to the importance of materials in political life, materials has become increasingly bound up with the production of information about their performance, origins, and impact.

Presents an original theoretical approach to political geography by revealing the paradoxical relationship between materials and politicsExplores how political disputes have come to revolve not around objects in isolation, but objects that are entangled in ever growing quantities of information about their performance, origins, and impactStudies the example of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline – a fascinating experiment in transparency and corporate social responsibility – and its wide-spread negative political impactCapitalizes on the growing interdisciplinary interest, especially within geography and social theory, about the critical role of material artefacts in political life

Freshkills Park : NYC Parks | manufactura de centauros | Scoop.it
Disquietin'Goose's insight:

...

The City is interested in using Freshkills Park as a platform for generating knowledge applicable to a broad range of urban environmental issues, at this site and others: reforestation, habitat restoration, soil production, water quality, alternative energy generation, even attitudes toward park usage. The physical size and 30-year timescale of the park project ensure that much of its acreage will be undeveloped for the next ten to fifteen years. The City hopes to capitalize on this available land by collaborating on research plots and permitting access that is restricted to scientists, technicians and students. Initial projects are already underway with the United States Forest Service and CUNY Hunter. The Department of Parks & Recreation continues to seek partners in academia, museums, government and the private sector in the interest of refining and targeting research questions toward the advancement of study and the pursuit of funding opportunities.

PHOTOESPAÑA | manufactura de centauros | Scoop.it

A Triumph of the Comic-Book Novel by Gabriel Winslow-Yost | The New York Review of Books | manufactura de centauros | Scoop.it
Corrigan begins with a set of “General Instructions” to the reader, the kind of thing a worried publisher, trying to sell a long, complex comic book to the general public, might have insisted on. But Ware’s instructions are flamboyantly unhelpful, a dense little maze of minute type, multiple-choice quizzes, and intricate diagrams, all written in a pompously gloomy style (“As such, the thinking person would have to conclude that, in general, the seeking of emotional empathy in art is essentially a foolhardy pursuit, better left to the intellectually weak, or to the ugly”).

Project Space: Objects in Mirror are Closer than they Appear | e-flux | manufactura de centauros | Scoop.it
Since its birth, cinema has made a paradoxical demand on its viewers: to consciously suspend their disbelief. This remains a preoccupation for contemporary artists who have grown up exposed to an intense flow of still and moving images. The film and video works in this exhibition expose the fracture between what we are shown on screen and what we see. Borrowing from various cinematic conventions, as well as formats including lecture, documentary, rehearsal and found footage, they examine the limits of our imagination and credulity. With a variety of approaches, their references move between the black boxes of movie theatres and the ‘black mirrors’ of our TV screens, computers and smart phones. The exhibition blurs the boundary between depiction and deception and questions the logic of storytelling. Does the illusive charm of the moving image undermine its authority as a visual record? And what role does the viewer’s imagination play in constructing a narrative?

@biblio The Body Multiple

@biblio The Body Multiple | manufactura de centauros | Scoop.it
Disquietin'Goose's insight:

DIVThe Body Multiple is an extraordinary ethnography of an ordinary disease. Drawing on fieldwork in a Dutch university hospital, Annemarie Mol looks at the day-to-day diagnosis and treatment of atherosclerosis. A patient information leaflet might describe atherosclerosis as the gradual obstruction of the arteries, but in hospital practice this one medical condition appears to be many other things. From one moment, place, apparatus, specialty, or treatment, to the next, a slightly different “atherosclerosis” is being discussed, measured, observed, or stripped away. This multiplicity does not imply fragmentation; instead, the disease is made to cohere through a range of tactics including transporting forms and files, making images, holding case conferences, and conducting doctor-patient conversations.

The Body Multiple juxtaposes two distinct texts. Alongside Mol’s analysis of her ethnographic material—interviews with doctors and patients and observations of medical examinations, consultations, and operations—runs a parallel text in which she reflects on the relevant literature. Mol draws on medical anthropology, sociology, feminist theory, philosophy, and science and technology studies to reframe such issues as the disease-illness distinction, subject-object relations, boundaries, difference, situatedness, and ontology. In dialogue with one another, Mol’s two texts meditate on the multiplicity of reality-in-practice.

Presenting philosophical reflections on the body and medical practice through vivid storytelling, The Body Multiple will be important to those in medical anthropology, philosophy, and the social study of science, technology, and medicine./div

Parliamentary Chambers | deconcrete | manufactura de centauros | Scoop.it

The spatial organization of formal assemblies has not substantially changed much from Athenian assembly to the modern concept of prime ministerial government that goes back to the Kingdom of Great Britain (1707–1800) and The Parliamentary System in Sweden (1721–1772) that coincided with each other. Classical democracy not only influenced the formation of later constitutions, it also created an architectural legacy which has dominated both the form and style of parliament buildings to the present day. Mountains of Kong - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mountains of Kong is a non-existent mountain range charted on English maps of Africa from 1798 through the late 1880s.[1] An early map resulting from exploration of the area and showing this west to east mountain range in 1798 was produced by English cartographer James Rennell.[1] The mountains were thought to begin in West Africa near the highland source of the Niger River near Tembakounda in Guinea, then continue east to the also fictitious Central African Mountains of the Moon, thought to be where the White Nile rose. Cartographers stopped including the mountains on maps after French explorer Louis Gustave Binger established that the mountains were fictitious in his 1887-1889 expedition to chart the Niger River from its mouth in the Gulf of Guinea and through Côte d'Ivoire.[1] However, earlier explorers for some time in the nineteenth century had failed to locate this mountain range, but it continued to appear on maps until late in that century[2] and even in the 20th century, when it appeared in Goode's World Atlas in 1995.[3]

Various other nineteenth century explorers of West Africa included the range on maps they produced or directed the production of after exploring the area including French explorer René Caillié, who explored the highlands of Guinea, Fouta Djallon, near the source of the Niger, the Cornish explorer Richard Lemon Lander and his younger brother John, and Scottish explorer Hugh Clapperton who also sought the course of the Niger River in its upper reaches.[1]

Steps to an Ecology of Mind - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Steps to an Ecology of Mind is a collection of Gregory Bateson's short works over his long and varied career. Subject matter includes essays on anthropology, cybernetics, psychiatry and epistemology. It was originally published by Chandler Publishing Company in 1972 (republished 2000 with foreword by Mary Catherine Bateson).[1]

The book begins with a series of metalogues, which take the form of conversations with his daughter Mary Catherine Bateson. The metalogues are mostly thought exercises with titles such as "What is an Instinct" and "How Much Do You Know." In the metalogues, the playful dialectic structure itself is closely related to the subject matter of the piece.

DEFINITION: A metalogue is a conversation about some problematic subject. This conversation should be such that not only do the participants discuss the problem but the structure of the conversation as a whole is also relevant to the same subject. Only some of the conversations here presented achieve this double format.
Notably, the history of evolutionary theory is inevitably a metalogue between man and nature, in which the creation and interaction of ideas must necessarily exemplify evolutionary process.[2]

No sabe traicionar. Solo sabe desvelar.
