L’emozione adrenalinica è il punto di partenza di questa nuova esperienza olfattiva. «Volevo una sensazione forte e vibrante, qualcosa di intenso – racconta a Grazia.it Julie Massé che ha creato la fragranza – ed è per questo che ho scelto, per le note di testa, il Nettare di ribes nero e la Pera che regala un accento frizzante al profumo, insieme al Pepe rosa».

Victor Mane said the award represented an important milestone for the group to be recognised as a sustainable and responsible company. We must not rest on our laurels because we know the hardest challenges are yet to come in this increasingly VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) environment."

The International Organization of the Flavor Industry (IOFI) has elected Jean Mane its new president at the organization’s October 2018 General Assembly meeting in Beijing. He succeeds Howard Smith of Virginia Dare who was the US delegate from the Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association. Mane is the CEO of multi-national flavor and fragrance company V MANE FILS, founded in 1871 by Mane’s great-grandfather and headquartered in Le Bar-sur-Loup, France. A synthetic organic chemist by training, Mane has served as president of both EFFA and the French flavor association SNIAA and has been a member of the IOFI Board for many years. Jean Mane becomes the second member association delegate to head up the IOFI Board, he assumes the Presidency as the representative for the European Flavor Association (EFFA). As president, Mane is responsible for guiding the ten-person Board in strategy development and implementation of the global association’s initiatives in science, advocacy, communication and sustainability, working closely with the association’s Executive Director Sven Ballschmiede.

Depuis le mois d'avril, MANE a mis en place une communauté de consommateurs de produits à la vanille, constituée de quinze amateurs. MANE s'appuie sur une plateforme digitale, permettant aux consommateurs de partager très facilement leurs prises de position, leurs expériences et leurs suggestions concernant la filière vanille.

Les premières semaines d'animation ont révélé que les préoccupations des consommateurs portent sur les conditions de travail des fermiers, la flambée des prix déconnectée de la qualité, la diminution de la forêt et la menace sur l'habitat des espèces animales... Ils expriment également leur attente de transparence de l'information sur la filière avec la nécessité de connaître avant tout l'origine de la vanille et son procédé de fabrication.

Toutes les suggestions, idées, interrogations... issues de la «communauté vanille» vont nourrir la réflexion de MANE, et aider à définir ses actions futures pour contribuer à une filière plus durable. Cette initiative a été dupliquée en Allemagne et au Royaume-Uni en juillet, pour une vision européenne

During the 27th ASIC (Association for Science and Information on Coffee) conference in Portland, Dr Maurin Cornuz presented the results of a study conducted by MANE in collaboration with the University of Singapore. This study proposes to confront the sensory evaluations of four iconic and popular arabica coffee origins performed on one hand by a team of CQI coffee Q-graders and on the other by a group of trained flavorists.
In parallel, aroma extract dilution analysis of the four coffee origins give chemical insight about the impact odorants of those specific coffee origins. Combined together, the sensory and analytical information allows flavorists to recreate coffee flavoring preparation specific of each origin.
Having coffee professionals and flavorists discuss and evaluate coffee together helped the latter understand and differentiate desirable traits in coffee and get insight from the consumer point of view. The result from volatiles analysis is then used as a backbone for the flavor creation and feedback from coffee professionals serves as validation. As proven by Mayer et. al., the mix of about 20 key odorants is sufficient to recreate the aroma of ground coffee, however the challenge faced by flavorists is to integrate constraints of taste and stability to their formulation.

MANE USA celebrated the opening of its new location in Parsippany, New Jersey, with a  grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony attended by Mayor Michael Soriano on Thurs, Sept 6, 2018.

The new 100,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility located in Northern, New Jersey is home to MANE’s Commercial, Creative, R&D and Corporate Teams. The expansive space is fully equipped with cutting-edge robotics, a 2,000 sq.ft. consumer insights testing center, sensory odor booths and extensive testing laboratories. Its 3rd floor houses a full-service hair salon and commercial grade laundry facility.

MANE gave three poster presentations at the 8th European Conference on Sensory and Consumer Research:

- How does your vanilla ice-cream feel? Using cross-modal association to create a visual experience of flavour. This approach can be used to align the flavour creation with a brand positioning and consumers expectations, or to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of a market products in terms of flavour orientation.

- Mouthfeel description of soft drinks, a multiple-sip MATI approach investigation. The aim of this study was to understand the dynamic of the mouthcoating sensation in soft drinks, linked to their sweetness perception, thanks to our approach of multiple-sip Multi-Attribute Time-Intensity (MATI). This study underlines the role of the mouthcoating perception in the “sugar-like” sensation of soft drinks and  demonstrates that taking into account the temporality of the sensations and a multiplesip intake allows us to better highlight mouthcoating differences in soft drinks.

- To what extent protein-flavor interactions have an impact on flavor perception in fat-free yogurts?

Sourcing vanilla in Madagascar.

MANE’s unwavering commitment to sustainable sourcing has benefited Madagascar ever since its arrival over 20 years ago.

We continually strive to create shared value for Malagasy families and vanilla farmers, and our sustainable sourcing which includes a Vanilla Community programme has positively impacted over 10,000 local inhabitants. Since its inception, this programme has funded the construction of a community rice granary, a school benefiting its 600 children and a local hospital. The programme itself provides vanilla bean crop financing, premium price for top quality, and an ethical remuneration model which provides 25% income increases. The farmers additionally receive support from our local partner FLORIBIS, in terms of best practices, agronomy and botanical research. At MANE, we work tirelessly to find manners in which to improve the local population’s life conditions, as well as generating greater income for these inhabitants, guaranteeing them a better future.

The timur pepper, grown and consciously sourced in Nepal, is emerging as a popular cocktail ingredient in leading bars across the globe. Indeed, the timur pepper was recently named by Michelin inspectors as one of the top food trends for 2018 : "timur pepper is on the rise, boasting a flavour and aroma of zesty citrus... pairs equally well with savoury and sweet dishes."

In line with this emerging trend, Staffordshire-based Nelson’s Gin has launched in November the latest blend in its portfolio, which celebrates the Nepali timur pepper.

To source the timur pepper as an ingredient, Nelson's Gin work with MANE. Deep in the communities of the Surkhet region, a day and a half's drive and trek from Kathmandu, the berry is harvested by locals before being dried in the sun to concentrate the aromas. Once cleansed of branches and seeds, the timur pepper is stored in the huts of the villagers before being sent to MANE for aroma extraction. Watch the journey of MANE sourcing the Timur Pepper.

On the 23rd October 2018, MANE organised a sensory master class in front of 200 People, which consisted in several interactive sensory sessions at the 20th International Recruitment Forum of The Swiss Education Group (César Ritz School) in the famous Stravinski auditorium of Montreux, Switzerland. Two years ago, MANE signed a partnership with the Culinary School César Ritz (Swiss Education Group). This prestigious school is based in Switzerland, and welcomes students from all over the world. Many of them will potentially become tomorrow’s top Chefs. Both MANE and César Ritz are investing in their future by training the next generation of chefs.

French cosmetics giant L’Oréal has launched its new organic brand, La Provençale Bio, into the French supermarket sector.

The formulations are based on extra virgin olive oil from Provence and are perfumed with four natural-based fragrances developed by MANE. L’Oréal worked with local financing platform Miimosa to promote organic production in the PACA region , donating 50,000 euros to help local farmers convert to organic olive oil production.

"Many consumers interested in organic said they weren’t very satisfied with what was on offer," said Hervé Navellou, Director General of L’Oréal France. "It’s for them that we’ve launched this accessible, certified organic range, made in France and with its star ingredient sourced in Provence. We’ve chosen to rely on the savoir-faire of provincial artisans capable of furnishing us with an exceptional raw material."

Jean Mane becomes the second member association delegate to head up the IOFI Board, he assumes the Presidency as the representative for the European Flavor Association (EFFA). As president, Mane is responsible for guiding the ten-person Board in strategy development and implementation of the global association’s initiatives in science, advocacy, communication and sustainability, working closely with the association’s Executive Director Sven Ballschmiede.

The goal of the association, which is dedicated to the global trade of safe flavoring materials, is especially relevant today, notes Jean Mane: “What we see happening around the world is that years of patient negotiations towards a global approach to international commerce are suddenly surrendering to a mounting tide of national protectionism.” He adds, “My key priority will be to maintain and eventually extend a global approach to the safety evaluation and regulation of flavorings.”

In 2019, IOFI will celebrate its 50th anniversary. Mane is enthusiastic: “I am lucky and proud that IOFI will celebrate its 50th anniversary in the middle of my term as president of the Association. It will show the resilience and sustainability of our industry and its continued growth.” Looking ahead, he sees a bright future. “The flavor industry is resolutely innovative, and will remain sustainable by continued innovation to deliver flavorings that confer unique characteristics to food and beverages.”

L'Oréal franchit une nouvelle étape dans le domaine de la naturalité. Le numéro un mondial de la beauté, lance une marque bio : La Provençale. Fait rare, "c'est la troisième fois que nous créons une marque", rappelle-t-on au sein du groupe.

Douze références enrichies entre autres en huile d'olive bio AOC Provence (soins du visage anti-âge, hydratant, masque, huile, pommade pour les mains, gels douche et déos sans sels d'aluminium) composent pour l'instant La Provençale. Les senteurs Olive Eclat, Jasmin & Mimosa, Bouquet d'été et Pétale de Miel des produits, elles aussi naturelles, ont été travaillées par les parfumeurs de la maison MANE (Céline Pasquier, Rolph Gasparian et Cyrill Rolland). The atmosphere of Florence has certainly inspired Ermanno Scervino's first fragrance, which was presented at Milan Fashion Week. Created by three MANE female master perfumers, Mathilde Bijaoui, Julie Massè and Véronique Nyberg, to enhance precisely the feminine essence of Tuscany.
An elegant and addictive jus, focused on the notes of a surprising tuberose and a deliciously soft gianduia, that the guests of the show could discover in absolute preview when the fragrance was diffused in the room for a new olfactory experience.

In a dialogue with the clothes of the show, the catwalk was crossed by the precious texture of the perfume, in a game of the senses: "The fragrance represents the completion of a look - says Ermanno Scervino - the olfactory accent that is added to the sight and touch of its fabric. I like the result very much: it recalls Tuscany, and the flowers of the garden of my house immersed in the hills of Chianti".

Native to southern east Asia, pomelo or pummelo (Citrus grandis (L.) Osbeck) is the largest citrus fruit from the Rutaceae family and one of the ancestors from which the rest of cultivated citrus hybridized. Despite its popularity in the region, few cultivars have received in-depth investigation of their volatile profiles.

In collaboration with the National University of Singapore, scientists of MANE Flavor Research Center in Singapore have investigated the volatile profiles of flower, leaf, peel and juice from Malaysia pomelo and compared the volatile profiles of peel and juice of pomelos originated from China, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia.
