The day started off like a normal day or so it seemed. I awoke to my alarm going off. From there, I got dressed, grabbed a quick bite to eat, and spent a relaxing day with Lok. I also tossed in a quick workout on the elliptical. However, partway through the day, I started to …

I have to admit it.  I am, frankly, quite baffled. For the last 20 years, and all around the world, we CEOs have invested untold millions into the question: “What does it take to have an engaged workplace culture?” We’ve bought books, retained consultants, rolled out surveys, looked deep into the hearts and minds of …

Time for a new approach to motivating millennials

Time for a new approach to motivating millennials | Management - Leadership | Scoop.it
A business magazine in Korea interviewed me for an article on the science of motivation. I didn’t realize the article was focused on millennials until I saw the headline -- the only part written in English. No matter where I work in the world, the question of motivating millennials seems to pop up. Understandable, since this group of people ages 16 to 37 constitutes the largest segment of the world’s current and future labor force (35% in the U.S.). I can’t read the article in Korean, so I thought I’d capture the essence of what I really think about motivating millennials.

James Schreier's insight:

This is one of many posts where my first reaction is:  "I want more information!!!"  There are several elements I'm curious about:  1) why does this person feel "betrayed" by the old boss?  2) What about when this person was offered the promotion?  Expectations?  Realities?  The one thing I really agree with, perhaps even more strongly that Madeleine states is that terminating employees, whether for performance issues or reorganizations is a reality.  Managers have to be able to professionally and personally handle this responsibility. HR and Coaches -- Yes!
