Brands Should Be Rebels WIth A Cause: Creating Brand HERESY - Trendwatching

Brands Should Be Rebels WIth A Cause: Creating Brand HERESY - Trendwatching | Management Leadership Brands Retail | Scoop.it

In another amazing read Trendwatching's latest report on Brand Heritage vs. Brand Heresy says brands who rebel against their own image will be well served by a contemporary consumer who wants a status quo shakeup.

Driving The Need For Brand Revolt:

* Brand Baggage (heritage becomes baggage).
* New Normal (post-demographic consumerism).
* Clean Slate Competition (consumers flocking to NEW brands).
* Blurry US & THEM lines - whose brand is it anyway?
* Not-so-Virgin Consumers (new markets, mindsets, heresies).

Love this defining paragraph:

"The reality for many brands is that the needs and wants of the new consumer often don't align with the narrative that they've labored to build.

For rising numbers of consumers, brand heritage and story has become at best irrelevant, and at worst an active barrier: one which prevents brands they might engage with from offering a product or service that's right for them today."

So those "cherished values" may be the albatross around brand marketers necks. "Consumers are embracing brands that drop the "Our brand must always" and "Our brand must never" and do the unthinkable."

Great report as Trendwatching strikes again.

@DavidAmerland New Value System
A great writer named David Amerland wrote a highly influential post asking what if we created a new value system for goods and services. This Trendwatching report points to that shift.

Shopify points out 25 interesting retail blogs.

Francey Smith's curator insight, October 31, 2014 3:10 PM

From my perch as a non-food retail marketer I can comfortably state that the retail blogs mentioned in this article have consistently presented a good overview of what the retailer marketer needs to know.  Even a scatter shot reading (we're all very busy thee days!) can be helpful.
