10 Characteristics of Professional Learning That Shifts Practice

10 Characteristics of Professional Learning That Shifts Practice | Makerspaces - Janette | Scoop.it

Across diverse districts I have asked teachers how they like to learn and what they want out of their professional learning opportunities. Over and over I hear the same kinds of responses and wishes for how they could learn.  There is a deep desire to develop their practice, not just be talked to but be inspired, valued, and pushed to take their practice to the next level.  To help teachers shift their practices and make learning experiences for their students the best they can be, these are the desired characteristics of professional learning that shifts practices:

Purposeful

Goal-oriented

Inquiry-based

Applicable

Safe

Learner-centered

Collaborative

Personalized

Action-oriented

These 10 characteristics likely do not come as a surprise as they align with much of what we know about the power of purpose, motivation, and empowerment in learning.  The problem is that they so rarely represent how teachers learn despite what we know.  Why?! Well, most often because it requires leaders and designers of these experiences to trust the learners, be flexible to meet their needs, allow for diverse pathways and be open to new ideas.

Often pressed for time and trying to fit it all in, many take short cuts to ensure that they have covered it all rather that engage in deep learning. Another challenge is that many have not truly experienced this type of learning in their formal education, which makes it hard to imagine how to create new and better experiences. Without new models, people tend to revert back and recreate their own experiences.

A great explanation of how maker spaces in libraries transform them from content consumption spaces to content creation spaces. Not only does this idea strengthen STEM initiatives but the library ties all curricular areas together through storytelling, production, research, and independent self-selection driven by student interests. This is yet another reason why a certified professional library/information specialist is imperative in every school!

Top 10 Things You Didn't Know Your Makerspace Needs

Top 10 Things You Didn't Know Your Makerspace Needs | Makerspaces - Janette | Scoop.it

Educators planning makerspaces know they can start small with simple circuitry materials, cardboard and hot glue guns. Or they can go bigger with soldering capabilities and power drills. Or they can go to the biggest with 3D printers and laser cutters.

For makerspaces incorporating digital technology, a green screen and an iPad with green screen apps are no-brainers, whether they go for a green bedsheet or a fancy installation. Whiteboard tables are widely known to be hot, as well as clear bins and neutral organization, pegboard and labels, craft sticks and straws and velcro tape.

Adding value: Principals’ perceptions of the role of the teacher-librarian | QUT ePrints

This paper reports on a study into principals’ perceptions of the role of the teacher-librarian. Nine principals in Australia were interviewed about the role of the teacher-librarian and library in their school. The findings indicated a range of ways in which the teacher-librarian adds value to the school, including in their role as teacher, providing the principal with a broad perspective on the workings of the school, providing advice and ideas, and providing leadership in the use of information and communications technology (ICT) at the school. It also identified a number of personal qualities valued by principals.
