Samsung and Microsoft reportedly discussing settlement over patent dispute

Earlier this month Microsoft filed a patent lawsuit against Samsung over royalty payments. Now according to a recent report from Korea Times, both the companies are apparently in talks to come to an agreement that would out an end to the lawsuit. Microsoft has claimed that Samsung is using Microsoft s April acquisition of Nokia s phone business as an excuse to not pay the royalties along with the interest on late payment outstanding since September 2013. The report goes on further to point that Samsung aims to cut a “comprehensive cross-licensing deal” with Microsoft. Both the companies are reportedly entering into ‘working level discussions which would let them settle the patent lawsuit. It is pretty clear that the two companies want to continue working with each other as Microsoft would want to use Samsung s position as a smartphone leader to push Windows Phones while Samsung might be interested in cloud computing and other software features. According to IDC, Samsung is Still No.1 in India

India being a fast growing smartphone market has become the centre of smartphone wars. Apple and Samsung have been trying hard to keep up with players such as Micromax, Lava, Karbon and the new entrant Xiaomi. The Indian handset market is currently led by Samsung with Micromax at No. 2, according to an International Data Corporation (IDC) report for India s mobile market in Q2. The market could experience a shuffle in the rankings amongst the top five vendors in coming quarters, as Chinese and local device makers aggressively tap the entry level segment of smartphones. The digits in the IDC report showed that in the overall mobile market, Samsung had a 17 per cent share, while Micromax had a 14 per cent share, ahead of Nokia which was the previous number two and which now has a mere 10 percent share. Karbon and Lava are at number four and five respectively and rest is acquired by other phone makers. In smartphones, Samsung ha held a 29% share, which however was a sharp fall from the 3

HTC Butterfly 2 is out and it’s a shame you probably won’t be able to get it

The Butterfly 2 is the third device in HTC s Butterfly series and the nicest yet. Announced today for Japan and East Asia, the device follows in the footsteps (or wing flaps?) of the original Butterfly and Butterfly s, two devices that combined an attractive plastic build with the high-end specifications and cool features of the One series. The Butterfly 2 is an interesting combination, mixing the specs and features of the M8 with the curved plastic build of the E8. Actually, the Butterfly 2 s spec sheet is better than the M8 in some areas, including the all-important camera. The Butterfly 2 packs a Duo Camera like the One (M8), but with a high-res 13MP sensor, instead of the 4MP offered by the One. You still get the depth sensor on the back, so you can enjoy the selective focusing and 3D tricks, if that s what floats your boat. But if you just want large, detailed shots, the 13MP sensor is arguably a better choice than the Ultrapixel camera of the metallic flagship. In another upgrad

LG was just rewarded with a couple of Red Dot design awards for its UX work on the G3 flagship, and now it s letting the world know that some of the G3 s software features will become available to other devices in its lineup. This isn t a surprise by any means, but we still want to salute the move to “standardize”, as LG puts it, the user experience across the lower rungs of its product hierarchy, to devices like the L Series. So what features should users expect to see making the jump? LG singled out the G3 s camera app, with its minimalist interface, fast shooting mode, and gesture support as one such feature. The Smart Keyboard, which users can resize and customize to suit their preferences is another piece of functionality going downscale. LG claims that using it can reduce input error by a whopping 75 percent, thanks to the app s smart word prediction abilities. Firefox Nightly for Android introduces Chromecast support

There is a large and still rapidly expanding list of Android apps that support Chromecast, one of the newest to hit the list is Mozilla s Firefox for Android. You ll need to use the Nightly build version of Firefox for now, but you ll be able to toss your favorite content to your Chromecast connected big screen. Mozilla engineer Lucas Rocha took to Google+ to share the news, showing off a video casting test page with a few embedded videos ready for your casting pleasure. It was only a couple months ago we got word of a Mozilla built/commissioned Chromecast competing Netcast, designed to do everything the Chromecast can do and more. While I didn t hesitate to belittle the unit for using the same YouTube.com/TV interface that is accessible from any web browser, we have not seen anything more on the device yet to prove me wrong about any limitations that it may have. With their own dedicated streaming stick in the works, it may be a bit of a surprise that Mozilla took the time to build C
