Here Are Some Questions I Use For Class Closing Activities — What Are Yours?

Here Are Some Questions I Use For Class Closing Activities — What Are Yours? | Lund's K-12 Technology Integration | Scoop.it

"I've previously written about research on the importance of “good endings.” It’s a priority for me to end my classes on an upbeat note, but I’ve been thinking lately that I might be able to enhance its benefit to students if I’m a bit more intentional about it with a regular formal closing activity that might take a minute or two. I’ve certainly often done this, but I’m going to try doing it more like 70-80% of the time instead of its present 50%."

11 Tips on Teaching Common Core Critical Vocabulary

11 Tips on Teaching Common Core Critical Vocabulary | Lund's K-12 Technology Integration | Scoop.it

Teaching vocabulary within the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) is an essential component of standards-based curriculum alignment. Making the critical words second nature to our students will enhance achievement on assessments and will be useful in college and career. To process and store the academic vocabulary of the standards, our students’ brains require an efficient automatic memory system. This system, also called nonmotor procedural memory, stores information that is repeated, such as multiplication tables, song lyrics, words and definitions.

32 Augmented Reality Apps for the Classroom - TeachThought | Lund's K-12 Technology Integration | Scoop.it

"Augmented Reality (AR) is a growing field of technology where real life is modified and enhanced by computer-generated sights and sounds. The most common use of AR can be seen through mobile apps. Point your device’s camera at something that the app recognizes, and it will generated a 3D animation or video superimposed over whatever is on your camera’s screen. The effect makes the computer-generated item appear like it’s really there. Want to see it in action? Here is a video from IKEA showing their AR app in action."

This is truly a great tool in my estimation, but theory and reality also collide with technology. If you are not 1:1 then the potential of the app is not getting used in the best way that it can.

Beth Dichter's curator insight, September 10, 2013 10:39 PM

As we move to the Common Core and we look at the Depth of Knowledge that will be required for our students it is clear that the need for our students to create is critical. This post starts with the following sentence:

"When was the last time your students said “Wow, that worksheet changed my life”?  Can you even remember a similar cookie cutter classroom activity or assignment from your days as a student? Yet they were a popular tool because they were structured and efficient in getting the class to a set finish point."

After presenting "the exploding volcano project" the post turns to four strategies. The short hand version is below. Click through to the post for additional information.

1. Start with your specific learning objective.

2. The idea to be expressed comes before the tool used to express it.

3. Make asking "How will this show mastery of the learning objective?" your classroom mantra.

4. Engage in evaluating the PROCESS of creation and not just grading the finished project.

There is also an example a learning objective and a project that one student submitted.
