Our students are reading all day long—text messages on their phones, emailed directions about homework, apps from advertisers. They read what interests them and what helps make their world a more real, relevant, and relatable place to live. And we can tap into their interests to embed speaking, listening, reading, and writing in classes to help achieve content objectives.

Students Say They Are Not as Tech Savvy as Educators Assume - EdSurge News

Students Say They Are Not as Tech Savvy as Educators Assume - EdSurge News | Lund's K-12 Technology Integration | Scoop.it

"A love for avocado lattes and Snapchat filters are just a few of the stereotypes following Millennials these days. But students are now pushing back on these generational generalizations, noting that assumptions regarding their attitudes, hobbies, and abilities are hurting them academically. One of the biggest misconceptions students at last week’s New Media Consortium’s Summer Conference (NMC) brought up was the idea that millennials are digital natives.

"Most people have heard this story before: the eight-year-old son teaching his forty-year-old dad how to use some new device or app. However, despite being an allegory of our times, a lot has been said off-the-record about misconceptions regarding students’ technological abilities. In an interview with EdSurge, Alexandra Pickett, the Director of New York State University’s Center for Online Teaching Excellence, noted that many of her students know how to use online platforms such as Twitter and Facebook for fun, but have no idea how to leverage them for academic and professional use. It’s a point the students at NMC echoed."

The 5th ‘C’ of 21st Century Skills? Try Computational Thinking (Not Coding) | #ModernEDU #ModernLEARNing #ModernSociety #STEM | Lund's K-12 Technology Integration | Scoop.it
There is growing recognition in the education systems around the globe that being able to problem-solve computationally—that is, to think logically and algorithmically, and use computational tools for creating artifacts including models and data visualizations—is rapidly becoming a prerequisite competency for all fields.

In 2012, the U.K. national curriculum began introducing computer science (CS) to all students. Singapore, as part of its “Smart Nation” initiative, has labeled developing CT as a “national capability.” Other countries, from Finland to South Korea, China to Australia and New Zealand, have launched large-scale efforts to introduce CT in schools, as either a part of new CS curricula or integrated into existing subjects. Here in the U.S., former President Barack Obama called on all K-12 students to be equipped with CT skills as part of an “Computer Science for All” initiative in 2016. Most emergent efforts in the US involving CT are currently part of CS curricula, although CT is increasingly seeing integration into STEM (especially science) learning.

Interesting perspective - great to see that CT can be associated with learning areas other than STEM.
Vivalist's curator insight, March 1, 10:21 AM
Computational Thinking (CT) is "the thought processes involved in understanding a problem and expressing its solutions in such a way that a computer can potentially carry out the solution."

Toys such as the recently Kickstarted Turing Tumble do just this: introduce kids to the notion of algorithms.

It's a very powerful field of studies for kids and grown-ups alike, because it helps understanding what's behind the curtains when it comes to computation.

It teaches how to divide a big problem into bunch of smaller ones that are easier to solve - and this is a solid skill to own.

Without changes in education, the future of work will leave more people behind - The Hechinger Report

Without changes in education, the future of work will leave more people behind - The Hechinger Report | Lund's K-12 Technology Integration | Scoop.it

"A glimpse into America’s future labor market suggests a boom in health care jobs, soaring employment in clean energy and a continued decline in manufacturing positions.

"Those are among the key takeaways from 10-year employment projections released last week by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The findings offer more evidence of widening socioeconomic inequality, the migration of jobs to the service sector and a drop in the number of middle-class jobs for workers with only a high school diploma.

"This unfolding economic shift is challenging educators to shape curricula that will prepare students for positions requiring an elusive combination of soft skills — the ability to solve problems, communicate effectively and work with others — along with technical capacities.

“The skill requirements in jobs have increased remarkably in their depth and breadth,” said Anthony P. Carnevale, research professor and director of the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce. “The pace of change is outrunning the ability of educators to provide those skills and to qualify people for entry-level jobs.”

Why Creativity?

Why Creativity? | Lund's K-12 Technology Integration | Scoop.it
The second reason we may see limited or no creativity in the process of teaching and learning is the focus on reaching targets. To be more precise the single focus on reaching a target that prevents us doing something different. Doing only that which is already being or has been done (despite success or the lack of it) to achieve the target is a real problem.

Supporting the development of digital skills is complex. Initiatives are often context specific and reliant on partnerships. In addition, the environment must be fertile for initiatives to flourish. Policy makers, education leaders, industry and the individual all have a role in equitable digital skills development.

Digital Note Taking Strategies That Deepen Student Thinking

Digital Note Taking Strategies That Deepen Student Thinking | Lund's K-12 Technology Integration | Scoop.it
Organization is a critical academic skill and one that many students struggle with in both the physical and digital worlds. Parents and teachers already help students get organized and now need to extend that to the digital world. Given the influx of technology in their academic lives, students need to develop an effective organizational system for their digital notes, projects and thinking.

I think the objective in the article is to point out pedagogy and growth mindset complement each other. Besides the use of pedagogy (leading students) and growth mindset (allowing students and teachers to use their lived-experiences) there is a reference to Professional Learning Communities.

I would add the work of William Pinar and the method of currere, which is grounded in phenomenology and pycho-analysis. I am exploring how hermeneutic phenomenology complements this method.

Can learning be accessible to all?  With appropriate pedagogy and technology digital learning provides an opportunity for people who are marginalized by time, place, and distance to obtain education and training.  Not everyone has the opportunity to save for school, quit work and attend a traditional full-time education program (while balancing family responsibilities).
