Education In Japan

Education In Japan | Picks4Me.com | Scoop.it

The early childhood education in Japan begins at home, day care
centers and kindergartens. At the age of six, the kids are enrolled for their
compulsory elementary education of three years at schools. Although the
secondary level of education in Japan is voluntary yet almost all kids get
enrolled in elementary schools to advance to upper secondary level. The outer
world wonders at the fast paced economic growth of Japan, the secret to which
lies in their education system. The war struck nation made necessary amendments
in their education system and rose to its feet within a decade. Japan still
follows the School Education Law and Fundamental Law of Education ratified in
1947 and continues to become the exemplary nation for the countries where
resources and manpower have been unable to bring about such revolution.
The
strength of the system of education in Japan is evident from
the fact that virtually hundred percent students from elementary schools advance
junior high schools. On average, the class size of the children in junior high
schools is 40. The teachers are required to have at least sixteen years of
education with major in certain subject to teach the students. English has not
been the compulsory subject till 2010, this fact is enough to show how deeply
the Japanese love and respect their culture and language. Ninety five percent of
the junior school students pursue the high school education and a about 80% of
these talented young Japanese students are further enrolled for college and
university education. Each year around 3 million Japanese Students get
admissions in full time day programs offered by 500 universities nationwide.
Keio University Kyoto University, Waseda University and of course the University
of Tokyo have added their great share in making the education in
Japan such far-reaching.

Japanese Style Education: Secret of Japan Success

What is the main factor that contributes to the overall success of a country or civilization? Is it the abundant natural resources, high achievement in science and technology, great leadership, nationalism or education? Since the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, Japan has a very fast development. Today, Japan’s products, services and social model have great impact on the life style of world population. For example, most of the people starts their daily routine in the morning by using product from LION such as toothbrush and toothpaste, shower with SHOKUBUTSU soap, iron shirt with a SHARP iron, drives TOYOTA car to work, sends their children to KUMON SHIKI class, works in the SUZUKI company and perform presentation using a TOSHIBA computer. Then, after work plays table tennis using NITTAKU ping pong ball, BUTTERFLY table tennis and wears MIZUNO sportswear. At night, they have their dinner at SUSHI KING in JUSCO shopping centre, for entertainment SONY television and at the end of the day, they sleeps on the bed with AKEMI bed sheet in air-condition room powered by FUJI air-conditioner. Hence it’s very obvious the list grows with Japanese brand that we use in our daily routine. In comparison it is rare to hear any Malaysian brands products or services that are internationally used. Not limited to daily goods, Japan technology also concur global high-tech products which have the state of art technology in field such as aerospace, Nano industry, medical , military and others.

Japan is full with natural disaster such as earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes and volcanoes. On top of that, Japan has no natural resources yield of ground and they have to import raw materials from around the world. In addition, their prime minister also changes over the years. With all this difficulties, what causes the Japan people to produce products and services that are so competitive in international market?

Here, I would like to reveal the secret of Japan’s success which actually is not a secret. Even the rise of Islam in the last 1400 years also applies the same success factor. In Arabic and Malay language, it is defined as “akhlak” or in English it is known as “moral”. Islam brings together “believe” and “moral”. The final outcome of good believes should be a good “moral”. Moral in this context refers to the value, attitudes and characters. As Muslim people understand the “akhlak or moral” are

divided into three types. First is moral towards God, second, moral towards other human beings and third, is moral towards nature. What I am trying to discuss here is not the moral towards God but moral towards human being and nature. For example in Islam, drinking beer is immoral deed and this is the type of moral towards God. Examples of the moral values meant by me are responsibility, selflessness, keeping promises, trustworthiness, not treacherous, cleanliness, respect, humility and

compliance which are reflect the moral more towards human being.

I have stayed in Japan for nearly 10 years and can clearly observe the good values in Japanese people. Of course not all Japanese people are having good values but it can be said Japanese people have these values more than what Malaysian people have. During my stay in Japan, most of the time I did not lock in my personal room or house. I feel safe being in Japan. No grill guarding any housing windows and doors in Japan. How about in Malaysia? In another situation, when a person buys a

second hand car in Japan, it is not necessary to search for any defect on the car as the sales person himself will reveal it to buyer one by one. How about in Malaysia? Salesman will try to hide the defects by all means. I have seen many traffic accidents in Japan and Malaysia. In Japan, the drivers will bow each to other as soon as they got down of their vehicle after the accident occurs. They will show the guilty expression for troubling others. What we can expect from Malaysian drivers as soon as accident happens? Therefore, it’s believed, the moral values are the factor that differentiates our nation with Japan. This is the key factor that where Malaysian needs to have for further progress of a country or society.

Now the question is how do we emphasized the good values into our children? Is it in school or its parent’s responsibility? Have ever ask our children about the values they have learned and practiced in school? Usually, we ask regarding subjects or about home works.

During my stay in Japan, I sent my two years old son to a nursery. After one year, during meal the boy was able to bring his own plate to the sink and wipe dinner table without being asked. If he saw his mother doing housekeeping, he will try to help his mother even though it is not perfect. Basically the children there been taught to help others. Just imagine how is the behaviour of Malaysian children at three years old? Will they do that? Can these values be adopted into our children if we send them to any nursery in Malaysia? I noticed that my son lost these values as soon as he is

enrolled child care centre in Malaysia which only focuses about academics. It is true that good values can be taught and practice at home, but the school must provide the same environment. Parents should also to be blamed for so urging schools to provide academic oriented education to their children. There is no point of having grown children with knowledge and good career position, but have no moral value. This will give an adverse impact on the community.

Our Honourable Former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was aware of the uniqueness of Japan and the importance of these moral values. Hence he launched the Look East Policy on February 8, 1982. The main objective of the policy is to create Malaysian society that has values and positive work ethics. Indeed, this policy has a positive effect on those who were sent to Japan and Korea for studies and work. However, I personally think that these good values need to be adapted by the entire community in Malaysia. It is preferable if our next generation can learn or practice these values as early as possible.

Why do we have to import the Japanese culture to incorporate these values? What are the advantages of Japanese culture? Masahiko Horie, former Japanese ambassador to Malaysia during his speech at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia on 7 April 2011 states that Japanese culture has undergone a long evolution. Samurai and Shogun era that we are familiar with was in around the year 1100. Prior to that were other Era as Heian Era (year 984 ~ 1185), Nara Era (year 710 ~ 784) and Asuka era (year 592 ~ 710). Culture and philosophy of life and work has evolved and lasting improvements. This led to a method of implementing Japanese values with a more efficient manner.

The former ambassador suggested that Malaysian should imitate or adopt the methods of application of these values that already undergoes long improvement process and this is for the good of Malaysia. I personally feel that adopting good values from Japan is very important and crucial to Malaysian society. No loss to imitate good value from Japan because it is free due to no copyright, but it was proven to have good impact on individuals and companies in Malaysia.

There are many Japanese phrases, methods, and philosophies on applying these good values. Among them are the 5S (Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Shitsuke, Seiketsu); the way to adopt good culture to have better work place which are clean and organized, 3G (Genchi, Genbutsu, Genjitsu); a formula to achieve better working efficiency by inspecting real place, real thing and real situation, 3M (Muri, Muda, Mura); a formula of reducing waste in working process, 3K (Kimerareta Kotoga, Kihon Dori,

Kichinto Mamoru); a phrase which gives emphasis on the importance of “properly do what is stipulated in the standard”, Dandori Hachibu; Preparation is 80% of success, Kizukai or Kikubari; alertness and caring attention to other’s needs or feelings, Konpon Gen In; technique that can be used to ensure that symptoms and effects are not mistaken for the root causes of a problem, Kaizen; Improvement, Gambaru; to fight or to have courage or to persevere, Meiwaku kakenai koto; avoid bothering others and many more.

In order to ensure higher working efficiency, safety and good quality product, these phrases, and philosophies are thought in Japanese company. I suggest that these positive values should be emphasized in Malaysian education system from childcare centre up to institute of higher education. By doing this, our future generation will have good values and working culture which will bring Malaysia one step further towards developed nation.

Referral Marketing 101: 7 Tactics to Launch Your Own Referral Campaign – Shopify | Picks4Me.com | Scoop.it
Study after study has proven that referral marketing is one of the best forms of marketing when it comes to sales and conversions. Simply put, referral marketing, sometimes also called word-of-mouth marketing, is just people purchasing products based on someone else's opinion or influence. It's a powerful marketing channel because people trust the opinions of other people in their lives and people they respect, whether that be family, friends, social media influencers or big stars.
It makes sense, we regularly get advice from our friends on which TV shows to watch, movies to rent, or restaurant to go to. And, as end consumers ourselves, we wan’t to share our stories, the products we buy and the brands we choose. This becomes magnified when the buying experience and products are exceptional.
In this post, we will show you the three fundamental reasons referral marketing is so powerful, some examples of extremely successful referral campaigns, and provide you with seven tactical steps to build a powerful referral marketing engine for your business.

Can Aspirin Lower Skin Cancer Risk?

Can Aspirin Lower Skin Cancer Risk? | Picks4Me.com | Scoop.it

TUESDAY, May 29, 2012 (Health.com) — Regular aspirin use, which doctors have long recommended for heart attack and stroke prevention, also may help reduce the risk of some forms of skin cancer, a new study suggests.

An analysis of the medical records of nearly 200,000 Danish adults found that people who filled more than two prescriptions for aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)—such as ibuprofen or naproxen—over a 10-year period had a 15% lower risk of squamous cell carcinoma and a 13% lower risk of melanoma when compared with people who had filled one prescription or less.

People who were prescribed high doses of NSAIDs for seven or more years had the lowest skin cancer risk, according to the study, which was published in the journal Cancer.

The study shows only an association, however, and it has some important limitations that preclude any firm conclusions about a possible link between NSAIDs and skin cancer.

The researchers couldn’t verify that the study participants actually took their prescriptions, for instance, nor did they have any data on the participants’ lifestyle, skin type, or exposure to the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Related links:

How to Protect Your Skin From the Sun12 Ways to Prevent Colorectal CancerIs It a Mole…or Skin Cancer?

Moreover, all of the study participants lived in northern Denmark, so the findings don’t necessarily apply to other populations and regions, including the United States, says Jennifer Y. Lin, M.D., a dermatologist at the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center, in Boston.

“There may be a real biology and a real explanation as to why [NSAIDs] are so helpful,” says Lin, who was not involved in the new research. However, she adds, “It’s still too early to tell all skin cancer patients to take these medications.”

The keys to preventing skin cancer haven’t changed, Lin says: limit sun exposure, use sunscreen and protective clothing, and avoid indoor tanning.

The role of NSAIDs in cancer prevention is an area of growing interest among doctors. Aspirin has been shown to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer and precancerous polyps, and in a pair of studies published earlier this year, researchers found that people were less likely to develop or die from cancers—including those of the lung, prostate, and bladder—if they took aspirin daily.

It’s reasonable to think that NSAIDs may fight cancer directly. The drugs reduce pain and inflammation by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, which are involved not only with inflammation but also with certain processes involved in cancer, such as blood supply to the tumor and programmed cell death (known as apoptosis).
