Cheyenne Valade's insight:

This is a really great, inspiring video in which IMO (Integration of Women to the Maritime Sector) talks about their plan to make the world better by 2015. They talk about 8 goals they chose to focus on, including gender equality. It is a simplified way to look at a complicated problem, and it is working!

Women's rights, 1968 to 2013: Have things really changed?
Portland Business Journal (blog)
In 1968, the women's liberation movement was in full force. The first black female was elected to Congress.
Cheyenne Valade's insight:

"Women in Oregon earn only 78 cents per every dollar men earn, and that, believe it or not, exceeds the national average."

Of course there have been many great changes for women in the past 45 years. I realize that we have made progress, but the statistic above is startling. It is 2013! There is absolutely no reason for this kind of wage discrimination. To me, it feels like we are still living in the dark ages. Wake up, America!

Cheyenne Valade's insight:

“We didn’t think of gender equality being a major theme in the game, but thinking back on the world we designed, it is true that women have key positions in its governance” - Jean-Maxime Moris

Interesting gamer take on the equality issue. I never thought about the lack of women in games, but I'm glad there is a company out there that is!!

OK... I absolutely hate to post this! But, as a collective project for social change, I believe it should show both sides of arguments, even if I completely disagree.

Ministry tackles gender discrimination
Cayman News Service
Under the theme: 'Make it a New Year's Resolution: Promote Gender Equality.
Cheyenne Valade's insight:

“Thankfully, with this information, members of the public now have a better understanding of how stereotypes and prejudice lead to direct, indirect and structural discrimination. This in itself is a powerful reminder that knowledge empowers us to take action in our everyday lives – and as a result, take action in our country.” - Dwayne Seymour

I think it is important to make sure that people are educated about what stereotypes are, and how they are used in everyday life as tools for inequality. There are a lot of misconceptions about stereotypes, and I believe that having open conversations about the ways that stereotypes work to build inequality is important to reversing the damage that is being done, especially when it comes to media.

Cheyenne Valade's insight:

“Collective action brings power” - Joe Sammons

Yes it does. This article discusses the continuously discouraging topic of women's reproductive/health rights. It is very sad to me that our politicians, in the deteriorating country that we live in, still find time to debate about the "needs" of all women in society. As if they know anything about our needs.

Since the 70s there has been a steady decline of the once revolutionary "Women's Liberation Movement." It seems that women aren't as willing to admit that they are still being greatly disadvantaged by our patriarchal society, and that is a real shame. We are settling for less, and for me, that isn't acceptable.
