Launch of first ever Health App Toolkit to help people understand and use health apps

A clear, concise, simple manual to help patients and the public make the best choices and decisions about health apps, “Health Apps—a Toolkit to Help You”, is available in print and online. Launched today, Wednesday, 1st October 2014, at the European Health Forum Gastein 2014, and circulated to the Forum’s 650 delegates (who come from all over Europe and beyond, and who represent the key stakeholders of the European health policy community).

This Toolkit is needed to answer the many questions that patients and carers have about health apps
A soon-to-be-published study* by PatientView will reveal that the public are confused by the sheer number of health apps available (100,000), and are not sure that a particular health app will help them. Members of the public may also not trust health apps, because they do not know who makes the apps, or whether their health data would be secure on an app.

[*Source: “What do patients and carers want from health apps?” A July-October 2014 global survey of over 1,000 patients, conducted by PatientView in collaboration with Health 2.0. Survey results to be released Monday, 10th November 2014, at the 2014 Health 2.0 conference in London.]

“The myhealthapps’ Toolkit is a good initiative to empower citizens. It is the type of health-literacy project that the European Commission encourages.”

—Robert Madelin, Director General, DG CONNECT, European Commission

"In self-management, you and your doctor are partners in care."

Behavior change app developers that seek adoption...listen up.  It did not say, "You and your app developer are partners in care."  They may not shout it through a bullhorn, but physicians want to see measurable results (aka outcomes) from the apps that claim to change patient behavior.

Dr. Kevin McGuinness's curator insight, September 29, 2014 10:16 PM

The behavior of health practitioner and patient, is the key to health promotion and health care access.

Can mobile health interventions help the developing world? | The New York Academy of Sciences

Can mobile health interventions help the developing world? | The New York Academy of Sciences | crowdhealth | Scoop.it
Among the keynote speakers at this year's symposium was Academy Member Ambuj Tewari, PhD, of the University of Michigan, who gave a talk on "Personalized Mobile Health Interventions." In particular, his talk focused on the potential for mobile health interventions-things like smartphone apps that help patients with cardiac issues or diabetes to manage their health-to meet the health needs people living in developing countries. In much of the developing world, where cell phones (and increasingly smartphones), are widely used, Tewari believes that mobile health interventions might help increase access to certain kinds of healthcare when the number of doctors and medical professionals remains very low.

Implementation Science | Abstract | Implementation of a self-management support approach (WISE) across a health system: a process evaluation explaining what did and did not work for organisations, ...

Implementation of long-term condition management interventions rests on the notion of whole systems re-design, where incorporating wider elements of health care systems are integral to embedding effective and integrated solutions. However, most self-management support (SMS) evaluations still focus on particular elements or outcomes of a sub-system. A randomised controlled trial of a SMS intervention (WISE¿Whole System Informing Self-management Engagement) implemented in primary care showed no effect on patient-level outcomes. This paper reports on a parallel process evaluation to ascertain influences affecting WISE implementation at patient, clinical and organisational levels. Normalisation Process Theory (NPT) provided a sensitising background and analytical framework.

Keith McGuinness's curator insight, October 22, 2014 12:22 PM

This is an important discussion for mbHealth.  Adoption of digital tools (for behavior change which, is core to self-management support), depends on designs that produce a useful outcome.  A useful outcome is one that advances the health objective of the health system (which means it must be measured and monitored).

iTunes highlights HealthKit-ready fitness, nutrition, and medical apps

iTunes highlights HealthKit-ready fitness, nutrition, and medical apps | crowdhealth | Scoop.it

First we had the announcement of HealthKit at WWDC, then a fitness-oriented iPhone 5s ad in June, followed by Apple’s entry into the fitness-tracking market with the Apple Watch unveiling, and now the App Store’s been updated with a new “Apps for Health” section.

This section continues Apple’s trend for using human curation in the App Store by highlighting 14 apps which take advantage of iOS 8’s Health app by bringing health and fitness data into one centralized apps for access by users.
