Sleepy Sloth's insight:

A good map of the siege area. It gives a slight view of what the city looks like and how the inhabitants saw the military blockade. It furthurmore shows the landscape of the city which gives a good idea why it was hard to escape the city.

Sleepy Sloth's insight:

Another book by Nenad Velikcovik. This one is also about Sarajevo, set with a father and daughter. The only review is a vague translation so bear with me.

Sleepy Sloth's insight:

The article written by Paddy Ashdown, former high representative of Bosnia, brings light to United States, UN, and NATO policy in the Balkans. In his writing he discusses the recent conflicts in Macedonia and reflects of the possibility for civil war to spread across the peaceful cultural region forcing foreign intervention at a high cost. The document further explains the abstaining of NATO, UN, and United States intervention being a mistake that is often changed too late. It also states the state in which the Macedonian army cannot remove rebel forces in it's latest conflict. The author explains that if a peace solution is not sought, a civil war will be inevitable.

Sleepy Sloth's insight:

The book is narrated by a teenage girl named Maja, who often wrtites of her everyday life and the siege. She and her family plus a few lodgers live in a museum during the siege. During the set time the siege drags on going on and off never truely taking a big role in the story. This book looks in on the daily life of Maja's grandma; Greta, her zen like mother, her father; a museum director, her half brother Davor and his pregnant wife Sanja, the lodgers Julio and Brikc; ex-partisians of WWII, and Sniffy; an aristrocratic lined Dalmatian.

Sleepy Sloth's insight:

One story of many from the siege strewn times in Sarajevo. This bloger brightens the fact that the city was cut off from the outside world. The UN airport was in fact dangerous and the only means of escape. Many freinds, family, and neighbors were effected by this war for the rest of their lives.

A fierce battle involving tanks, machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades erupted today in the center of Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, raising fears that efforts at achieving
Sleepy Sloth's insight:

The article first covers the topic of Sarajevo. It breifly explains the contrast between the Olympic Sarajevo of 1984 and the first days of the siege. The sides are also drawn, being mainly the Serbian (formerly Yugoslavian) army versus Muslim Slavs. It also covers the arrest of Bosnian president, Alija Izetbegovic, who was brought to a nearby barracks and detained. It was clear he was not allowed entrance to Sarajevo. The commanders who captured him dispute the reasons for detainment. In this conflict both sides are blaming each other for the siege.

Sleepy Sloth's insight:

The video starts by stating that the now peaceful city was once overshadowed by bloodshed. It is also a cultural center in the region also named the Jerusalem of Europe, Sarajevo. The siege started in 1992 affecting the many ethnicity especially the Bosnian Muslims and citizens of the city. The video further explains that those in Sarajevo thought of themselves not as ethnicity, but as Yugoslavs. The campaign of the polititians in Belgrade to turn neighbor against neighbor failed in this area. The international community is put in a different light. A veteran explains that when the Sarajevan citizens looked up to the UN for assistance, they put an arms embargo on them. He claims that they purposely let us die.
