Isolation is one that seems rather big and is listed as a disadvantage on many sights. Whether is isolation from the crowd or the other band members, people seem to feel disconnected when using in-ears.

I am seeing more and more musicians in my practice, and they often ask about in ear monitor (IEM) systems. What are the advantages and disadvantages of these systems over traditional floor monitors?

Another article comparing in-ears against wedges, with in-ears being the better one. Their strong point was that in-ears help eliminate most feedback issues. Yet one could argue you wouldn't have problems if you knew what you were doing when it came to positioning the wedges.

A great review on the advantages on in-ears. Though one point that really stood out for this was that the mixer needs to know the band because even a small offset on the mix can ruin it for a performer, and knowing them helps you know exactly what they need.
