I organize a regional high school math club and have found that 7th and 8th graders taking Algebra 1 that have participated in competitive math have stronger problem solving skills that high school students taking Calc 2 at a local college who haven't participated in competitive math. The difference is having skills vs knowing how to utilize the skills. Maybe the new interview question to ask is "Have you ever participated in competitive math?"
