Lo esencial de la educación basada en competencias no son, a mi modesto entender, las competencias en sí mismas, sino el enfoque global de la enseñanza que implica en diversas dimensiones críticas: el rol del profesor y el alumno; el aprendizaje dentro y fuera de la escuela; el papel esencial de la evaluación y, cómo no, el enfoque basado en el dominio o mastery learning. Para ver las relaciones entre estos aspectos, te sugiero estudiar esta entrada anterior del blog. También esta otra en la que reflexiono sobre las diferencias entre muchos de estos aspectos, en particular las diferencia entre estándares, objetivos, competencias y enseñanza para el dominio.

There are a number of factors that contribute to the design and development of effective learning videos. In keeping with cognitive learning theories, video text, images, animation, and audio content should be designed to minimize cognitive load:

 

Segment (chunk) content carefully.When providing tutorials, use a first-person rather than a third-person perspective.Provide both spoken narration and related imagery/action. (However, for accessibility provide a means for the learner to access the text of the narration.) Use a conversational tone in the narration.Provide advance organizers and other visual and verbal cues to assist learners in schema creation.Associate content with emotion (positive or negative) to increase motivation and retention.Give the user control by including interactive tools for searching and navigation. Doing so improves both learner performance and satisfaction (Zhang, Zhou, Briggs, & Nunamaker, 2006).

Can you fix my computer?" This simple question (or a similar one) has most likely been asked of every instructional designer (ID), indicating a misalignment about what IDs do and what others think they actually do. This confusion is nothing new, but what seems to be different now is that those of us in the field may have bought into the confusion — or are helping sustain the misunderstanding because we have lost our way or forgotten where we came from.

In this blog we offer a quick refresher on the origins of instructional design, which is especially valuable because the demand for what we do is increasing. As Kyle Peck reminds us, "a 'perfect storm' of forces both within and outside education are about to accelerate the evolution of learning and learning design, increasing the demand for well-prepared learning designers, learning-related tool builders, and learning-related researchers."
