What is Spoofing?

Email spoofing is one of the best known spoofs. Since core SMTP fails to offer authentication, it is simple to forge and impersonate emails. Spoofed emails may request personal information and may appear to be from a known sender. Such emails request the recipient to reply with an account number for verification. The email spoofer then uses this account number for identity theft purposes, such as accessing the victim's bank account, changing contact details and so on.

The attacker (or spoofer) knows that if the recipient receives a spoofed email that appears to be from a known source, it is likely to be opened and acted upon. So a spoofed email may also contain additional threats like Trojans or other viruses. These programs can cause significant computer damage by triggering unexpected activities, remote access, deletion of files and more.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT

Interesting to see how pirates distribute their loot and wha constitutes valuable information, other than credit card numbers.

What is most interesting here I believe are these stats:

thousands of fake female profiles

- 90-95% of actual users are male

Speaks volume on the anonymity of the Internet and the lack of reliable information out there.

Mark Zuckerberg Covers His Laptop Camera. You Should Consider It, Too.

Mark Zuckerberg Covers His Laptop Camera. You Should Consider It, Too. | Cibereducação | Scoop.it
Mark Zuckerberg is one of the most powerful men in the world because billions of people give Facebook, which he founded, free access to their personal data. In return, users receive carefully curated snapshots of his life: baby photos, mundane office tours and the occasional 5K.

On Tuesday, observers were reminded that Mr. Zuckerberg, 32, is not just a normal guy who enjoys running and quiet dinners with friends. In a photo posted to his Facebook account, he celebrated the growing user base of Instagram, which is owned by Facebook. An eagle-eyed Twitter user named Chris Olson noticed that in the image’s background, his laptop camera and microphone jack appeared to be covered with tape.

Other publications, including Gizmodo, used the tweet to raise the question: Was this paranoia, or just good practice?
