Northrop Frye, Pete Colgrove and the price of fame

Northrop Frye, Pete Colgrove and the price of fame | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

To mark the centennial of Northrop Frye's birth a week ago, I want to register -- not quite a disagreement with Martin Knelman's lament here about the lack of acclaim for our great Canadian literary critic.

Just like in games, we've leveled up National Gaming Day to be an even bigger event this year. We have a new name - International Games Day @ your library - and a new date (the first Saturday of each November). This year's celebration of communities coming together to play at the library will take place on Saturday, November 3rd, and will include our traditional board game donation and national video game tournaments. However, this year we have some additional activities to add to the fun.

Ads coming soon to Toronto Public Library date-due slips

Commercial advertising in libraries is so “uncommon,” according to a report from the city’s chief librarian, that “examples of policies and practices are difficult to find.” But Mississauga and Calgary both sell date-due slip ads.

“It doesn’t tend to get, shall we say, high notice, but it does put a message into hundreds of thousands of hands very inexpensively,” said Mississauga library services director Don Mills.

Georgie is an Android app that will turn a regular smartphone into a powerful tool for the blind. Georgie uses fingers and gestures to let users navigate the software, just like you do normally. However, with Georgie, you hold your finger down, wait for a beep and hear the function you’re touching read out loud, whether it’s to make a call, send a text, or determine your location. Georgie makes extensive use of voice control software.

Recommending Books for the Characters of BREAKING BAD

Recommending Books for the Characters of BREAKING BAD | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

Frequently grim, but just as often daffy, each season of AMC's Breaking Bad crystalizes into pure, novelistic TV drama. Some of these characters need guidance. Some need nurturing. Others simply require enablement. This is entertainment after all. Today let’s recommend some books to all those shambling in the wake of Heisenberg’s fallout.

Seven media centers throughout the district continue to keep their doors open two hours each week, and local kids are welcome to read, check out books, or attend read-alouds. Although it's not a new concept, it's the first time Salem-Keizer has kept summer hours-and so far, kids seem to be enjoying it, says Stephen Cox, the district's library media program specialist.

Amazon’s rumoured same-day delivery service could crush U.S. booksellers | Quillblog | Quill & Quire | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

Amazon’s new goal is to get stuff to you immediately — as soon as a few hours after you hit “buy”… Same-day delivery has long been the holy grail of Internet retailers, something that dozens of startups have tried and failed to accomplish … If it can pull that off, the company will permanently alter how we shop. To put it more bluntly: Physical retailers will be hosed. (-Farhad Manjoo).

You Can Not Do More With Less

You Can Not Do More With Less | LibraryLinks LiensBiblio | Scoop.it

Libraries and librarians need to stop saying we can do more with less. We can’t. We can do less with less. Despite our “smile and make the best of it” attitude the hard truth is that less for us means less for our communities and they deserve more.
