‘Always a place for pen and paper’

‘Always a place for pen and paper’ | Libraryless | Scoop.it
In May 2012, the Gold Coast’s Varsity College made national headlines for phasing out printed books from its school library collection in favour of digital resources. Then-principal Jeff Davis told parents the library budget would be spent on e-fiction and subscriptions to online databases for research, while empty bookcases would be sold and the space reconfigured to accommodate student laptops, with wi-fi internet access and IT support desks...
Five years on, books are back on the shelves at the state-run Varsity College thanks to a renewed focus on reading and literacy by new executive principal Steven McLuckie, who believes physical books offer better engagement for students than their digital counterparts.

How important are libraries in elementary schools?

It’s no secret that when funding goes for a elementary school, one of the first affected areas is the school library. A school with a dedicated library could end up with only a shelf in a classroom.

Commentary: When our students are living in a book desert. | Libraryless | Scoop.it
In her latest commentary, Ellie Herman looks at yet another reason so many students struggle to read at grade level. They have neither books nor libraries.

pru's insight:

One of the saddest comments in this very clear commentary on the importance of school libraries as promoters of equity.

"But why should they want to read when we do everything in our power to devalue the act of reading and to remove or shut down places to read from low-income communities?"

A powerful account of a student and teacher experiencing 'a book desert' in their school and community. No school libraries in many LA schools has created this 'book desert'.

Evidence can include the personal stories of people. The use of student voice or teacher voice pieces illustrates the personal impact of decision making and program implementation on individuals. We can learn so much from LISTENING to these voices.

Bureaucrats need to learn to listen. There is so much you can learn about the impact of your decisions on the lives of those dependent upon your decisions, as this piece by Ellie Herman illustrates. Just multiply Xavier's personal experience by hundreds of thousands. You get the picture.
