School Librarians – Leadership, advocacy and hand wringing | library life | Scoop.it
School librarians still feel the need to be advocating for their positions and credibility within their school communities. Even though research has demonstrated a clear coorelation between a good school library and qualified teacher librarian and student achievement. The reality for school libraries and librarians is pretty grim in 2017.

5 Strategies to Demystify the Learning Process for Struggling Students - Mind/Shift

5 Strategies to Demystify the Learning Process for Struggling Students - Mind/Shift | library life | Scoop.it
Barbara Oakley’s professional biography does not suggest that she was once a struggling math and science student: She is an engineering professor, author of A Mind For Numbers: How to Excel at Math and Science and Mindshift: Break Through Obstacles to Learning and Discover Your Hidden Potential (which is not affiliated with this MindShift). Oakley co-created Coursera’s most popular course, “Learning How to Learn,” with Terrence Sejnowski, which has enrolled nearly 2 million students.

But Oakley is a self-described “former math flunky” who “retooled” her brain — and who has since made it her life’s work to help others learn how to learn by explaining some key principles from modern neuroscience.

banner ad design is the best technique to attract the user to the website.

David Alzate's curator insight, December 1, 9:05 AM
For each student, demystification begins with a direct and open conversation about the learning disabilities that brought them to Churchill. This dialogue continues throughout the student’s time here, and is something they carry on with them to high school, college, and their careers. These informal conversations between students, faculty, and parents are supplemented by formal demystification curriculum, which includes one-on-one and class discussions, literature, and student presentations. ts is very important to:
-Talk about why you struggle with certain tasks and what is different about the way your brain works Identifying your strengths, including things you are good at inside and outside the classroom
-Identify a weakness, or something that is hard for you Developing a list of strategies for overcoming specific challenges Identifying a list of allies who can help you through a challenge

Researchers have been able to discern that comics help to create a positive attitude and increase motivation (Engler, Hoskin & Payne, 2008; Kilickaya & Krajka, 2012). Apple and Kikuchi (2007) have also shown that computer based material that allow students to have control over content can result in benefits such as being student centered, motivating, increasing self reliance and autonomy, and allowing for real world tasks. Pixton was launched in 2008 and redesigned in 2010 as a Web 2.0 site. This allowed users to create, interact, collaborate and share content online with each other through social media dialogues. Users are creators of user-generated content in a virtual community. Pixton is a way for students to engage in the world of comics and to express themselves through creating and sharing their own comics. It provides a powerful visual writing tool through the use of any web browser, making it easily accessible for all learners. Through the use of Pixton, critical skills such as being able to convey an idea concisely, telling a story in a logical sequence, and collaborating with others are developed in a multimodal setting.

Nikki Hale's curator insight, December 7, 10:52 AM
This article raises some interesting ideas that I believe can be applied to facilitation.  Often I see people who are uncomfortable with that moment when their participants are in the zone of not knowing. They feel the need to fill the space with answers, solutions or examples to "help" the part.  What if as this article suggests that is where the magic lives?

Here's a piece from Gartner that makes some good points about data storytelling.

But a lot of the author's points need a bit more clarification. I began to write a review, and it turned into a blog post. The link to the Gartner article is at the top of the post.

Here are the pieces I clarify:

  1. What data storytelling is and is not
  2. The role of data visualization
  3. The biggest mistake technology leaders make when attempting a data story
  4. How to craft a data story
  5. The second biggest mistake you'll make
  6. And the distinction between data biases and a storyteller's point of view

Read my blog and then the article so you get the whole picture. Let's whip those data stories into shape to maximize your influence and impact.
