Top 5 Lessons Learnt After a Successful 1-to-1 Tablet Deployment - Educate 1 to 1 | Library and Information Training | Scoop.it
Over the past six months our school has handed out just shy of five hundred iPads to pupils across two year groups and teaching staff. The mere logistics of physically handing them out were challenging enough, and lessons were learnt, but our most important lessons have come from where it really matters, and that is ensuring that tablet devices are successfully embedded into our teaching and learning practices. These are the top five lessons we have learnt thus far:

Issues in Open Access to Research (EDUCAUSE Review) | EDUCAUSE.edu | Library and Information Training | Scoop.it

The success of open government data is indisputable. By empowering data scientists as well as the general public to interrogate publicly shared government data sets, we have been able to discover new trends and correlations as well as spot malfeasance. Open data affects publicly funded academic research at a governmental and funder level as well, including the types of research supported and what happens with the data collected. Nonetheless, it took a recent statement from the Public Library of Science (PLOS) to ignite the conversation about open data between individual academic researchers.

High Quality Content. What Is It, How Do You Get It

High Quality Content. What Is It, How Do You Get It | Library and Information Training | Scoop.it

The problem with content is that it’s best graded by those who consume it, but Google and other search engines are the ones who are going to determine your page rank. That makes it a tricky dance, to be sure. High quality content should be the backbone of any SEO strategy so that new users and customers find your site organically, but with such a difficult to define metric, it can be hard to know if you’ve achieved your goal.

Google has actually created a short guide to help site owners better understand what it is that’s expected of them in this new era of SEO. By now we all know that underhanded practices like keyword-stuffing are out, but what, exactly, is in? According to Google, they want to see content that is useful, credible, high quality and engaging

What is Geography?

Via Seth Dixon

Flo Cuadra Scrofft's curator insight, March 21, 2015 9:38 PM

This presentation talks about the misconceptions of geography and about what it really involves. Geographers describe and try to explain how locations interact and relate to one another; are arranged the way they are; and have become what they are now. They also use critical thinking to project what the world might look like in the future. As there's usually so many questions that have to be answered, geography is an interdisciplinary work, meaning that it is a blend of natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Geographers also develop other skills, such as mapping and graphing (spatial representation skills) and development of verbal concepts, frameworks and mathematical models (spatial theorizing skills). Geography, therefore, can be used to study many issues, such as climate change, sustainability, human rights, among others.

Reflection- as the presentation accurately shows, many people believe that geography is just about memorizing countries and our world's natural resources locations, but in reality, geography goes much deeper than that. Geography is about asking questions and trying to come out with the best answers in order to solve issues that can range from local usage of land to international security.

Over time, Google faced competition, if you can call it that, from Yahoo and Microsoft (which later became Bing), and that was mostly a battle for PPC dollars. Now, Google faces inspired competition from Amazon and Facebook. Neither is trying to simply copy Google. The battle is much bigger than that.
