The Rise of Digital Poster Sessions: creating new learning interactions in the library - The Ubiquitous Librarian - The Chronicle of Higher Education

The Rise of Digital Poster Sessions: creating new learning interactions in the library - The Ubiquitous Librarian - The Chronicle of Higher Education | Libraries and eLearning | Scoop.it
We’ve also seen the rise of digital poster sessions. The room has eight large monitors on the walls and two additional mobile monitors that can be utilized. We can clear out tables and chairs to create an open room where students move around the screens and talk about projects. Think of a poster session but with 70-inch monitors instead of tack boards. While most of these sessions have been static (jpg or ppt) some have included video or interactive web content.

When Michael Bierut was tapped to design a logo for public school libraries, he had no idea that he was embarking on a years-long passion project. In this often hilarious talk, he recalls his obsessive quest to bring energy, learning, art and graphics into these magical spaces where school librarians can inspire new generations of readers and thinkers.

Universities redesign libraries for the 21st century: fewer books, more space

Universities redesign libraries for the 21st century: fewer books, more space | Libraries and eLearning | Scoop.it
UC Berkeley’s newly remodeled undergraduate library is modern and sleek, with its top two floors featuring low-slung couches, a futuristic nap pod, and meeting spaces with glass walls made to be written on and colorful furniture meant to be moved.

The library has even dropped its rules against bringing in food and drinks on those floors. That’s because they no longer contain any books, which could be damaged or stained.

California’s oldest public university has removed 135,000 books from Moffitt Library, shipping most to other locations, to create more space for students to study, recharge and collaborate on group projects — a staple of college work today.

A year in the life of a student-centered library

A year in the life of a student-centered library | Libraries and eLearning | Scoop.it
There’s no “typical” day for a library media specialist. In one school day, we can teach a class about fake news, help one student find the perfect resource for his research project, and guide another toward a “just-right” book series that appeals to her personal interests. For 21st-century media specialists, the idea of the library as a quiet space is out and creating new opportunities for deeper learning with students is in.

Our district, Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) is the eighth-largest school district in the nation. We provide a wealth of educational opportunities for students and families that range from Head Start to adult-education programs within our 227 traditional public and magnet schools. We are a melting pot of urban, rural, and suburban areas. The word “diverse” doesn’t begin to describe our wide array of students and schools. It’s our job to make sure that at every school, every student has equitable access to high-quality reading, learning, and technological resources.

The Important Emotional Labor of Librarians Most People Never Think About

The Important Emotional Labor of Librarians Most People Never Think About | Libraries and eLearning | Scoop.it
Being a librarian is not an easy job, and it’s not because we occasionally have to clean up vile messes. It’s not easy because, like Steven Assarian explained in his article, “As a Business Librarian, I Help People Find Their Passion,” people sometimes come to us at a crossroads. They’re afraid of making a mistake that may put their lives in turmoil. Heck, sometimes their lives are already in turmoil. Librarians take on that chaos; we have no choice but to face down the power, joy and suffering both, that people bring into our space. That’s the emotional labor of librarianship. It’s not something we often talk about to the public, or even that much to each other. But it’s real, it’s hard, and it’s important. Thank you for letting me share a little about it.

Free Lunch at the Library

Free Lunch at the Library | Libraries and eLearning | Scoop.it
Librarians used to forbid any food or drink to avoid staining books and attracting pests. People who tried to sneak snacks in the stacks would be reprimanded. But in recent years, a growing number of libraries have had a major shift in policy: They are the ones putting food on the table.

Hundreds of libraries are now serving federally funded summer meals to children to ensure that they don’t go hungry. The change is part of an effort to stay relevant to patrons, and to pair nutrition and educational activities so low-income children get summertime learning, too.

Enid Costley, the children’s and youth services consultant for Library of Virginia, summed up the rationale for starting to serve free food: “For kids to be well-read, they need to be well-fed.”
