Refreshing Your MakerSpace | Anna Crosland, T.L. | Librarians are lifelong learners | Scoop.it
Beyond the investments in kits such as Makey-Makey or robotics or Lego, the heart of the MakerSpace is in the consumables. The paper cups, tape, cardboard and straws that not only inspire some serious creativity and ‘outside the box’ thinking but also are the great equalizer – accessible to all students and teachers.

We recently gave the Vanier MakerSpace a makeover by restocking some of those consumable items. Although donations, cardboard and packing materials flow through the space throughout the year, sometimes it is just more efficient to stock up on some of the basics.

With visits to several Dollar Stores we invested $300 in additional MakerSpace consumables for our school of 550 K-7 students. This included more large storage containers. Here’s what we chose:

Without libraries we are less human and more profoundly alone | Nicola Davies

Without libraries we are less human and more profoundly alone | Nicola Davies | Librarians are lifelong learners | Scoop.it

Nicole Davies writes: "Librarians are far more than stackers and catalogers. They are creative curators of their book collections. They review and renew their flocks of books, adjusting what they have to fit their readers, highlighting certain sections and topics to reflect the world. They are on hand to guide and encourage, to foster relationships between books and people. Subtly, quietly, inexorably, they weave individuals into a community. They make a library shimmer, as if the books were the scales of a dragon flexing as it folds and flies."

'Makerspaces' explode in popularity in schools

'Makerspaces' explode in popularity in schools | Librarians are lifelong learners | Scoop.it
Lissa Davies didn’t hesitate to put 255 elementary school students into a room together with a mountain of cardboard, tape and scissors.

“We want these students to be excited about what they’re doing. And what you see here is students who are totally engaged in what they’re doing,” the Keheewin school teacher-librarian and curriculum co-ordinator said over the din of high-pitched voices Friday.

Armed with plans they revised on the fly, students in the south-side Edmonton public school were engrossed in a school-wide makerspace challenge to build a game out of cardboard.

“People are making (such) cool things,” said six-year-old Wyatt Knorr, who’s in Grade 1. “They’re using their brains, and thinking, and problem solving.”
