Why it’s worth being a member of the Liberal Democrats

Why it’s worth being a member of the Liberal Democrats | Lib Dems | Scoop.it
Today, the Liberal Democrats fulfilled their key election pledge of raising the income tax threshold to £10,000.
And they’ve produced a nifty little picture to tell us about it. And we should rightly be proud.
PeterboroughLibDems's insight:

This doesn’t tell the whole story, though. How did this get in to our manifesto in the first place? Did it fall out of the Orange Book and hit David Laws on the head? I have to say there’s no clue in either of the emails I’ve seen from Danny Alexander today.

Actually no. It came from an idea by Chester’s Elizabeth Jewkes, way back in early 2009. The Chester Lib Dems website has the story.

PeterboroughLibDems's insight:

Leading Paralympians hit out last night at what they felt was double standards in the New Year Honours list in which multi-gold-medal-winning Paralympians missed out on the highest gongs.

Cyclist Sarah Storey was the only Paralympic athlete to be given the top award of a dame or knighthood, despite many Paralympians racking up far more gold medals than cyclist Bradley Wiggins or the sailor Ben Ainslie, the two Olympians knighted in this year's list.

Among those criticising the 2013 list is the dressage rider Lee Pearson OBE, who told The Independent on Sunday he was "disappointed" not to get a knighthood after winning his 10th gold medal at the Paralympics this summer, adding: "It's the discrepancy that pisses me off."

PeterboroughLibDems's insight:

More than 23,000 police officers and staff are moonlighting in second jobs, with the figure soaring nearly 20% in a year, it was reported today.

The figures mean more than one in 10 officers in England and Wales earn a second income from non-police work, according to an investigation by the Mail on Sunday.

At the same time, the number of investigations into potential rule breaches has tripled, raising questions over conflicts of interest arising from second jobs.

This has left local residents, schools, parents and businesses being forced to endure endless year-on-year increases in traffic and road safety concerns.

What the Liberal Democrats have done: new party booklet.... + its FREE! :) | Lib Dems | Scoop.it

This is a rather nifty new publication from the party, with some great content and presentation that is well ahead of the traditional party fare for these sorts of documents. It’s been produced in time for conference, which is very good news as that makes it a huge step forward on the messaging inconsistency that was last autumn.

If you’re looking for more material in a similar vein, remember there’s my own Liberal Democrat achievements in government infographic too (which the party’s policy experts kindly helped provide data for).

City Labour party discards Murphy as prosepctive parliamentary candidate, ..... despite his efforts in the general election 2010!

City Labour party discards Murphy as prosepctive parliamentary candidate, ..... despite his efforts in the general election 2010! | Lib Dems | Scoop.it

Another bizarre fact to bare in mind is that the new Labour PPC - Lisa Forbes - was only elected in May ..... so within 5 months of being elected to represent Orton Longueville she's looking to do something else???

Eh? The reason is she will NOT be allowed to be a City Councillor as well as an MP!

And given that her Term as City Councillor lasts until 2016, then if succesful - it will mean that an early by-election will need to be called costing local taxpayers thousands of extra £'s! #LabourHaveMadeAMistake

One member of the Peterborough Liberal Democrat Executive, commented, "If it had been Ed Murphy standing again, we'd have been worried, as we believe the Peterborough constituency is no longer a two horse race, but now we are encouraged by this latest news!"

The Old Lincoln Road (South Werrington) that runs from the A15 Parkway through to David's Lane (North Werrington), has endured year-on-year increases in traffic volume, several significant road accidents and has even been used as a LGV learning route in recent years.

Did you know? That in 2007 local Lib Dems put forward a formal motion calling for action, only for the Tory controlled council to vote against it at a Full Council meeting? Since then the local FOCUS team and Lib Dem Councillors have continued the fight!

Tories climb down over boundary changes ........... #ConsAreStupidFact | Lib Dems | Scoop.it

"I’d commented before on the oddity that was the Conservative Party’s insistence it would select candidates for the 2015 general election on the basis of the now still-born new constituencies, thereby gifting a significant campaigning advantage to other parties.

"No more. The Conservatives have seen sense and, despite David Cameron’s talk of pressing ahead and hoping to win a vote to get the new boundaries in place, the party organisation has instead accepted reality and is selecting and is selecting candidates on the existing boundaries."
