"A Spanish naval officer born in Cartagena, he participated in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, and in the Spanish resistance against Napoleon's invasion in 1808. He was later appointed Viceroy of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, but was removed by the May Revolution and banished back to Spain soon afterwards."

The spark the rebels needed was given by Napoleon when he invaded Spain.

Spain fought to keep her hold on the colonies.
