Svi Asbl's insight:

" had come, for a set time, with a specific task, without training, with the goal to save the world. I went to India with the audacity that my very being would somehow change the public education system of an entire country. I set off with a closed-mind, set in my assumptions of how education should be and what children need from a school to be successful later in life. I believed that my privileged American education would somehow lead me to be a good teacher and that cultural and economic boundaries would not stand in the way of."

Voluntourism: Sending America’s “Best and Brightest” as a Guilt Trip | Brown Political Review

Voluntourism: Sending America’s “Best and Brightest” as a Guilt Trip | Brown Political Review | Voluntourism | Scoop.it
Svi Asbl's insight:

Currently, our models of volunteering do not offer adequate space for communities to voice their own needs and perceptions of what the solutions to their problems would look like. There are certain movements that have recognized this need, such as the inclusion of Ngangkari healers in aboriginal community clinics in Australia who now work alongside doctors and medical staff when providing medical care to local communities. Although not a volunteer-based program, this model exemplifies the importance of maintaining community needs, standards, traditions and knowledge when entering and aiding a population of people.

International Volunteering: A Shift in Thinking | LSE Careers blog

International Volunteering: A Shift in Thinking | LSE Careers blog | Voluntourism | Scoop.it
Svi Asbl's insight:

"I would argue that our energy needs to be redirected – it’s foolish to spend time laying the blame solely at the feet of those signing up to volunteer abroad. After all, you cannot know what you do not know! If we really want to experience a transformation in the sector, a step away from the unethical activity of the big for-profit providers and the clouded perspectives of the naïve volunteer, then it is up to us to make it happen. [...] I feel these three things, awareness raising, training and education, are the main elements needed in order to bring about an improvement in the makeup of this sector, but of course, there are a long list of things which both sides — both the volunteers and the providers — should be considering.  "

Why you shouldn’t participate in voluntourism | Matador Network

Why you shouldn’t participate in voluntourism | Matador Network | Voluntourism | Scoop.it
Where we feature people and projects around the world committed to social justice, environmental sustainability, community building, and positive changes.

Via Mawyl
Svi Asbl's insight:

Voluntourism wouldn’t exist as an industry if travelers were happy to efficiently donate money for local organisations to do the work themselves. For better or worse, many folk want to have a hand in the process of helping communities. That desire can be a useful (or at least benign) learning experience, or it can be wholly unhelpful. To what degree your next journey to volunteer abroad will be one or the other depends a great deal on how you are able to honestly confront some difficult questions about why you are going, who you are going for, and whether you are participating in a project that – in the fine detail – is going to be a force for good.

Orphanage voluntourism holidays - Mums do travel

Orphanage voluntourism holidays - Mums do travel | Voluntourism | Scoop.it
Would you like a stranger to pay to spend time with your child? A stranger recently arrived from another country, who doesn’t speak your language, who has no child-related qualifications or experience and who may not have undergone adequate CRB checks? What if something had happened to you and your child was in residential care? …
Svi Asbl's insight:

I was shocked to read that 74% of children in orphanages in Cambodia are not orphans at all. Sickeningly, it seems that the increasing popularity of volunteering with children abroad has led to an increased demand for orphans. Children are being separated from their families in order to satisfy the needs of volunteers who want to ‘help’ them. Orphans are now a commodity, it appears."

The Problem With Little White Girls (and Boys)

The Problem With Little White Girls (and Boys) | Voluntourism | Scoop.it
Why I Stopped Being A Voluntourist
Svi Asbl's insight:

"Before you sign up for a volunteer trip anywhere in the world this summer, consider whether you possess the skill set necessary for that trip to be successful. If yes, awesome. If not, it might be a good idea to reconsider your trip. Sadly, taking part in international aid where you aren’t particularly helpful is not benign. It’s detrimental. It slows down positive growth and perpetuates the “white savior” complex that, for hundreds of years, has haunted both the countries we are trying to ‘save’ and our (more recently) own psyches. Be smart about traveling and strive to be informed and culturally aware. It’s only through an understanding of the problems communities are facing, and the continued development of skills within that community, that long-term solutions will be created."

#InstagrammingAfrica: The Narcissism of Global Voluntourism

#InstagrammingAfrica: The Narcissism of Global Voluntourism | Voluntourism | Scoop.it
Voluntourism is ultimately about the fulfillment of the volunteers themselves, not necessarily what they bring to the communities they visit.
Svi Asbl's insight:

Voluntourism is ultimately about the fulfillment of the volunteers themselves, not necessarily what they bring to the communities they visit. In fact, medical volunteerism often breaks down existing local health systems. In Ghana, I realized that local people weren’t purchasing health insurance, since they knew there would be free foreign health care and medications available every few months. This left them vulnerable in the intervening times, not to mention when the organization would leave the community.

Cambodia's Orphan Business

Cambodia's Orphan Business | Voluntourism | Scoop.it
People & Power goes undercover to reveal how 'voluntourism' could be fuelling the exploitation of Cambodian children.
Svi Asbl's insight:

"But, inadvertently, well-intentioned volunteers have helped to create a surge in the number of residential care homes as impoverished parents are tempted into giving up their children in response to promises of a Western-style upbringing and education. Despite a period of prosperity in the country, the number of children in orphanages has more than doubled in the past decade, and over 70 per cent of the estimated 10,000 'orphans' have at least one living parent."

Svi Asbl's insight:

"David is exploring the way these camps operate in a contemporary global climate where ideas of “health” and “health care” become conflated and pills, syrups, surgeries and syringes are often championed at the expense of other material and nonmaterial conditions that are also responsible for promoting and sustaining health. Examples include nutrition, clean water, peace, dignity, and hope. While both participating in and documenting these camps, David has begun to examine questions surrounding the ethics, limits, and benefits of short-term medical interventions." http://depts.washington.edu/anthweb/enews/2009-12/nepal.php
