Following a tragic fire at a factory in Bangladesh last year, Walmart has announced a series of new standards for vendors to meet as well as strengthening its standards on health and safety. The world’s biggest retailer has sent a letter to all of its suppliers informing them they could be "permanently barred" if they subcontract their work to unauthorised factories such as Tazreen. Consumers have moved past ingredient lists and are now focused on seeking out non-genetically modified and sustainable “farm to table” products that can be traced back to local and regional farmers and producers, according to a new survey. Third-party certifications and heightened media coverage are helping to drive interest in sustainable meat, poultry and seafood. About seven in 10 shoppers used package labels or in-store signage to learn about the brands they were buying.

Even the more progressive-minded companies including Unilever and Nestle have failed to use their enormous power to create a more just system for farmers and local communities. Oxfam's Behind the Brands report also accuses businesses of being overly secretive, making claims of sustainability and social responsibility difficult to verify on the ground. They often focus on individual efforts while ignoring root causes and long-term solutions.

Fair play in supply chains

Fair play in supply chains | Les achats responsables | Scoop.it

Following the reports of Sherrin and Canterbury footballs using child labour and the factory fire in Pakistan that killed 300 workers, ECO-Buy speaks to Etiko on how to ensure an ethical supply chain. Codes of conduct and a tick-and-flick approach are not enough - it requires establishing a presence with suppliers and regular auditing. Fairtrade certification also is a good system that uses unscheduled audits, checks every step along the supply chain, and gives back to the community through development initiatives.

In 2013, will companies finally face up to supply chain risks?

In 2013, will companies finally face up to supply chain risks? | Les achats responsables | Scoop.it

Supply chain scandals hit the headlines in 2012, including Apple's Chinese labour conditions, fatal protests at mines in South Africa, the Tazreen factory fire linked to Walmart, and Greenpeace's Toxic Threads campaign. Many companies thought they had addressed these risks by implementing factory audits, but they are generally incomplete, ad hoc, and are too easily cheated. Now companies are going the next step, inviting NGOs like Oxfam into supplier factories to help create change and using robust audit systems such as Sedex.

Going beyond fair trade: the benefits and challenges of direct trade

Going beyond fair trade: the benefits and challenges of direct trade | Les achats responsables | Scoop.it

While consumers have been trained to ask for Fairtrade, ensuring protection and minimum wage for farmers, the system has its drawbacks including high price of certification, and lack of direct impact on smallholder farmers (being implemented at an intermediary cooperative level). Some companies are going beyond the minimum to dealing with smallholder farms directly and encouraging high quality product for premium prices in a system called 'direct trade'.
