A national lawyers' group has criticised the introduction of mandatory minimum sentences for gun crime in NSW, warning they are being abandoned internationally because they swell prison populations and are extremely costly.

Mandatory sentences are unjust and simply don't work. We have already proved that in the NT where they were ensuring the soaring rates of imprisonment for our disadvantaged indigenous communities. Go to jail for stealing a loaf of bread? Surely that was only in our convict days, but no, it happened when the NT brought in 3 strikes laws.
