Simon Lindley is Organist Emeritus of Leeds Minster. He served for periods of over forty years both as Organist and Master of the Music here and at Leeds Town Hall in his capacity as City Organist – the City Council named him City Organist Emeritus in August this year. Nowadays his time is taken up training and conducting choirs, playing the organ and piano. Upcoming concerts next year include opening recitals on the restored instruments at Sprotbrough Parish Church [St Mary’s] near Doncaster and The Grove Methodist Church, Horsforth, here in Leeds as well as a return visit to the Parish Church of Holy Trinity, Berwick upon Tweed.

Still involved with St Peter’s Singers as this acclaimed chamber choir’s Music Director each week [he has been in office since 1977], Dr Lindley is also Conductor of Sheffield Bach Choir, Doncaster Choral Society and Overgate Hospice Choir, Halifax.

Simon gives regular recitals here at the Minster, at Leeds Town Hall, Halifax Minster and at Fulneck Moravian Church, Pudsey. Educated at Magdalen College School, Oxford and the Royal College of Music, Simon held posts in the City of London and at Westminster and St Albans Cathedrals prior to moving to Yorkshire in 1975.

Leeds Minster: Lunchtime Organ Recitals in December

MR ANDREWS

This week’s Friday Lunchtime Organ recital at Leeds Minster on 8 December at 12.30 pm is dedicated to the memory of Albert E Andrews – “Andy” to his many friends.

Since the time of the annual Carol Concerts in support of Emmaus, Leeds, spear-headed by Canon Graham Smith, then Rector of Leeds, Andy was fully supportive of a considerable range of musical presentations at what was then Leeds Parish Church and is now Leeds Minster. This was most recently the case with regard to the 40th Anniversary Concert of St Peter’s Singers held in June this year, for which he generously defrayed the costs of the orchestral musicians.

In particular, his help in the annual Christmas concerts in aid of the Choral Foundation Appeal made these memorable evenings an ongoing reality. The marginal costs were covered and all takings went to aid the endeavour. The same was true with the Battle of the Organs events masterminded for a decade with great style by David Houlder and presented with the generous cooperation of Makin Organs and Church Organ World. Andy’s vision to have the instruments and the players visible to the audience on a television screen brought to Leeds year after year the inimitable Keith Hearnshaw, the leader in that particular field, to the great enjoyment of all.

His regular “spot” just inside the Angel Screen in front of the Wardens’ Pew is now empty since an extended hospital stay and his death earlier this term.

Many associated with the Minster miss him greatly, and remain profoundly grateful to him for his support over a long period.

Leeds Minster Organist Emeritus, Simon Lindley plays seasonal favourites for the seasons of Advent and Christmas – including Sleepers wake, The Holy Boy, The Coventry Carol, Rhapsodie sur des Noels and Sleigh Ride. The programme lasts around forty minutes. Admission is free and all are warmly welcome. Refreshments are available beforehand and afterwards in the City of Leeds Room.
