UNESCO ICT Competency Framework for Teachers – Version 2.0

UNESCO’s framework emphasizes that it is not enough for teachers to have ICT competencies to be able to teach them to their students. Teachers need to be able to help students become collaborative, problem solving creative learners through using ICT so they will be effective global citizens. The Framework therefore addresses all aspects of a teacher’s work.

This is as far from student or teacher agency as one can get, but we can’t blame the professor for the sad reality of how most education continues to be measured and celebrated today. If learning is reduced to this, then it is true to say that the computational power of digital technology is being wasted on learners and that they will be bored by lectures.

I constantly feel that attempts to measure the impact of technology in education are done in a comparable way to taking a car engine, putting it in place of the horse and expecting it to do a better job of pulling the cart.

Digital teachers wouldn’t need days off and would never be late for work. Administrators could upload any changes to curricula across an entire fleet of AI instructors, and the systems would never make mistakes. If programmed correctly, they also wouldn’t show any biases toward students based on gender, race, socio-economic status, personality preference, or other consideration.

Personalization is often used in the ed-tech community to describe a student moving through a prescribed set of activities at his own pace. The only choice a student gets is what box to check on the screen and how quickly to move through the exercises. For many educators that’s not the true meaning of “personalized learning.”

How is that different than the traditional process of prescribed set of activities. The only difference is pacing, maybe? What is different is it is an facile and trite new expression that is easy to throw out there and impress people. It is part of a nonsensical neo-liberal agenda.

I subscribe to John Dewey, William Doll, and Ted Aoki and letting students have a voice in their learning in ways that allow them freedom to make choices and still follow the curriculum-as-plan.

Personalized learning is not learn at your pace and check the box when you are done. Thats control and compliance to learn something. Personalized learning misgiving the learner the  freedom to follow a meaningful line of inquiry, while building the skills to connect, challenge and analyze information and make their assumptions on best way to leverage those skills.

Those who argue that educational research has nothing to say to teachers are likely to waste a considerable amount of time innovating in ways that do not benefit their students. Those at the other extreme, who focus on ensuring that practice is based on ‘what works’, will find that no educational initiative can be implemented in the same way in every school. Adjustments need to be made, but they need to be made by people who understand the research so that the initiatives do not suffer what Stanford education professor Ed Haertel called “lethal mutations”. Teachers, leaders and policymakers all need to be critical consumers of research.

Do you know that passive teaching methods lead to a concept retention rate of less than 30 percent? On the other hand, participatory techniques generate retention rates of up to 90 percent. Where our traditional education system fails is that we remain largely focussed on outworn practices that keep student engagement passive, and retention at the bare minimum.

Machine-based translation is amazing, but hundreds of millions of people on our Pale Blue Dot can’t enjoy its benefits–because their language is nowhere to be found in the translator’s pull-down menu. Now, two new artificial intelligence systems–one from the Universidad del País Vasco (UPV) in Spain and another from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU)–promise to change all that, opening the door to true universal translators like the ones in Star Trek.

The routine of the majority is to wake up and immediately check their phone. Their email, notifications, the news, and social media dictate their thoughts.

 

This trains them to live reactionary lives, unfocused and frantic. If you condition yourself to always respond to whatever tasks come up — no matter how trivial or mundane — you make it 10x harder to focus and enter peak states.

One of the most critical insights regards students’ perceptions of their instructors’ approach to technology in the classroom. As stated, “A majority of students said most of their instructors have adequate technology skills, use technology to enhance learning, and encourage the use of collaborative technology tools. However, students said fewer faculty use technology for sophisticated learning tasks (e.g., engagement, creative and critical thinking), and relatively few faculty ask students to use their own devices for in-class work.”

Being the parent of a child with a learning disability can be an emotionally charged experience. Frustration and confusion can complicate the conversations between parents and teachers about what to do. Respect for each other and open communication can reduce tension and enable parents and teachers to benefit from each other’s expertise and knowledge of the child. Working together, either informally or during formal evaluation, parents, teachers, and children can inform one another about how best to address a child’s needs
