What every school needs from a digital strategy

What every school needs from a digital strategy | Learning & Technology News | Scoop.it

The problem is compounded by the fact that many of the adults involved in education simply lack the experience and skills to be appropriate role models in the use of social media. This is why a greater, more concerted and more constructive involvement of schools in the digital lives of their students is necessary if we want our students to understand how to be good all-round citizens. Simply ignoring this other dimension of pupil behaviour seems to me to be grossly irresponsible.

Nik Peachey's insight:

Thinking Critically through Digital Media

Thinking Critically through Digital Media | Learning & Technology News | Scoop.it
The book uses as its basis the development of key digital literacies. These include the ability to understand visually presented data, the ability collect and analyse data using a range of techniques and survey tools and the ability to create and deliver a range of presentation types using digital media tools.

Whilst developing these digital literacies students are also encouraged to assess the validity, credibility and underlying bias of the information they study and are given a range of research tools and techniques for reassessing the information and evaluating how it fits within their personal framework of belief systems and values.

Creating Student Engagement with Acadly

Creating Student Engagement with Acadly | Learning & Technology News | Scoop.it
I think this is a really great tool and with a great approach to balancing enabling individual teachers and supporting its business through university subscriptions. I hope they soon start rolling this model out to other types of schools. I'm sure the attendance feature would have some huge benefits for schools and universities that need to track overseas student attendance for visa purposes, like those in the UK.
Nik Peachey's insight:

A tool with a really useful approach to digitising the classroom experience within schools and universities.

10 Keys To Cognitive Flexibility | Problem Solving

10 Keys To Cognitive Flexibility | Problem Solving | Learning & Technology News | Scoop.it
While this definition, and these strategies, tend to frame “flexible” thought as a departure from one’s normal way of thinking, a more comprehensive definition might account for the efficiency of that normal way of thinking as well: how flexibly can we engage various parts of our brain to respond to a task, whether or not the task requires us to think “differently”?

Mixing and Extending Reality: Ed-Tech Options in Higher Education | Learning & Technology News | Scoop.it
Our classrooms and our approaches to learning are evolving in fascinating ways, as are the tools that affect our concept of what a classroom is and how we can use it to meet our learners’ needs. Our educational technology tools more and more frequently are offering us previously unimagined opportunities. And we are beginning to embrace—and struggle with—the reality—or mixed reality—of those blended (onsite-online) spaces.

Helping students control their mobile devices

Helping students control their mobile devices | Learning & Technology News | Scoop.it

When a designer builds a mobile app, they do everything they can to design it so that it’s engaging and holds your attention for as long as possible. The designer has a range of tools at their disposal to enable them do this and many do it very successfully. Helping students to understand this and helping put them in control of their devices can be the first steps to ensuring they use them in a more productive and constructive way.

Carlos Fosca's curator insight, January 9, 11:39 AM

Kim Flintoff's curator insight, January 9, 11:24 PM
“Of Pearson’s latest plans he says “once again Pearson conflate education with (their) content delivery and (their) measurement systems. They will, I suspect, be massively disrupted and become the Kodak of Education as we realise that context is king rather than content, and that we need new metrics to recognise the things we value today, rather than the things we might have valued yesterday.””

The challenge of researching dialogic interactions in digital classroom contexts | BERA

The challenge of researching dialogic interactions in digital classroom contexts | BERA | Learning & Technology News | Scoop.it

‘Classroom dialogue’ can be thought of as a very specific use of language, one that involves using language as a cultural and psychological tool in a way that is productive for learning. Through a process of thinking with others, dialogic approaches can support learners to creatively build knowledge together. Dialogue in classrooms is, therefore, about much more than just ‘talking’.
