Are iPads and tablets bad for young children?

Are iPads and tablets bad for young children? | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

Flewitt thinks that to deny children access to tablets is to "risk having one section of society that is growing up with skills and one section that is growing up without. You might think that it doesn't matter because they will develop those skills later. But it's not the same. They won't identify with it. It's not part of who they are … Children have been born into a world where these things exist," she says, "like we were born into a world where there were televisions, cars on the streets and packaging on food."

Implications Of Learning Theories On Instructional Design

Implications Of Learning Theories On Instructional Design | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
The world of Instructional Design has evolved over the years. Influences from various learning theory movements like behaviorism, cognitivism, and social learning have constructed a foundation which acts as pillars of successful approaches. While each theory includes specific focal points with regards to how learning occurs—either by behavioral response or knowledge acquisition—they have contributed unique perspectives on learning as a whole and are responsible for how the field of Instructional Design has changed over time.

To allow our brains to develop their full potential, “we need to take control over how we use technology,” said Gazzaley. “How do we build stronger brains so that we have less distracted minds?” This can be done by modifying our behavior, but he also believes that technology itself can play a role in enhancing cognition.

Blogging About The Web 2.0 Connected Classroom: Why All Educators Need SAMR And TPACK

Blogging About The Web 2.0 Connected Classroom: Why All Educators Need SAMR And TPACK | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
On its surface technology can make learning more fun and engaging. Allowing students to create podcasts or work on websites, write blog posts or use 3-D printers certainly engages students and shows them what is possible. However, what is lacking from many of the discussions is what pedagogical impacts the use of technology can have on learning. Moreover, if there isn’t a clear understanding of what types of activities promote the most student gains, then the use of technology is just flashy and in some cases, makes learning less effective.

106 Experts Share Their Thoughts on the Future of Education, Part 1: PreK-12

106 Experts Share Their Thoughts on the Future of Education, Part 1: PreK-12 | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

The future of education is digital. We live in an increasingly digital world, where technology is a part of our lives in so many ways. Now more than ever, it is crucial that we incorporate digital technology into education. To prepare students for higher education and future jobs, we must ensure that they are familiar with technology.

Chong Jiaxuan's comment, March 11, 10:42 AM
The experts mentioned in the articles all give opinions that classrooms will become more digitalised. This is not a doubt as at a young age of 2-3 years old, children are exposed to many forms of technology, like mobile phones, laptops and computers. They grow up accustomed to such items and will therefore use these technologies intensely as they enter school. One expert says that lectures in homogeneous classrooms will be a thing of the past because students now have access to knowledge at their fingertips, and thus teachers need to teach soft skills such as collaboration and teamwork to the students. I agree with this because as children grow up in a digitalised age, they lose the chance to interact with other children because their eyes are glued to their screens. The children lose their abilities to socialise, and thus schools will come into play.
