22 Simple Daily Assessment Strategies That Really Work

22 Simple Daily Assessment Strategies That Really Work | Learning & Technology News | Scoop.it

One of the highest goals of education is the achievement of understanding. We live in a world of online information. This has transformed our students’ expectations not only of learning, but also how it is assessed.

Educator Andrew Churches reminds us that today’s learners “expect and demand transparency, adaptability, contextual and collaborative learning, and the opportunity to use technology. These changes shape the pedagogy we need to employ to engage and motivate our learners.”

Guest post: Why Schools Need to Teach Technology, Not Ban It | risk(within)reason | Learning & Technology News | Scoop.it
What we do need is a coherent plan to teach digital citizenship in schools. Digital citizenship addresses the appropriate use of technology. It is not about the technology itself but rather about the effects that arise from its usage. It’s an interesting approach that focuses on teaching about the ethical usage of technology.

How Important Is Writing by Hand in This Digital Age?

How Important Is Writing by Hand in This Digital Age? | Learning & Technology News | Scoop.it
Composing an essay is quick work on a digital device. Writing by hand slows down the thought process, and it gives the learner time to formulate language expression. Making notes and writing essays by hand requires learners to think about words and how they are spelled, the best ways to use the words in sentences, and how to structure the sentences containing them.
Nik Peachey's insight:

I'm not so sure. I tend not to hand write anything these days. I do like sketching my thoughts and notes though.

Thinking, Shallow And Deep – Personal Growth –

Deliberate thought is more reliable but we rarely stop, reflect, and make slow decisions, because in many situations our responses are automatic hence the need to hone your thinking skills.

Shallow thinkers rarely think beyond the obvious. They take information on the face value. A shallow thinker just looks at first-order consequences.

A deep thinker, on the other hand, looks at the whole chain of effects, impacts, and outcomes.
Nik Peachey's insight:

A good article for developing a better understanding of how to encourage critical thinking.

Innovation: Creating and Learning in AR, VR | Learning & Technology News | Scoop.it
I don’t have all of the answers, but I enjoy being able to turn to students for help. I enjoy learning with and from them. Empowering students with the opportunity to share their skills brings about positive changes in the classroom, especially in terms of peer relationships and collaboration. Trying out new technologies shows we are interested in bringing new ideas and ways to learn into our classrooms, which is a good model for students.

The Future of E-Learning

The Future of E-Learning | Learning & Technology News | Scoop.it
Twenty-five years ago when I created custom presentations using Harvard Graphics (pre PowerPoint) I thought that one day people will know how easy this is and I’ll be out of work. Today, close to three decades later, not much has changed. Sure we’ve got a lot of cool technologies and all of that. But the presentations and the courses are still mostly the same quality (for good or bad).

A Discussion about Learning in the Classroom

A Discussion about Learning in the Classroom | Learning & Technology News | Scoop.it
I recently had an important conversation with my students. It’s probably not a dialogue they’ve had before, and to be honest, it’s not one I’ve had with students before this semester, either. The questions asked are simple, but the answers are somewhat abstract and require some real thought. This exercise was quite powerful and will hopefully positively impact how my students think about learning, class, and studying/practicing.

Study finds popular ‘growth mindset’ educational interventions aren’t very effective – | Learning & Technology News | Scoop.it
According to the researchers, a number of the studies investigating the effectiveness of growth mindset interventions did not follow best practices for experimental research. For example, more than one-third of studies didn’t check whether the programmes actually influenced students’ mindsets. Of those that did, nearly half failed that check, indicating that the programmes didn’t successfully alter mindsets.
