This is a perfect way to approach 21 st Century skills. The book allows students to be aware of the current issues happening in the world. So that learners cñuld have a different perspective of what learning a new language involves. Moreover, I this book may be the perfect complement of a class based on Task Based Instruction. I think we as teacher can take some of the situations presented in the book and offer them to student as a task.

It’s almost as easy to drive changes that impair memory and physical and mental abilities as it is to improve these things. Merzenich says that older people are absolute masters at encouraging plastic brain change in the wrong direction.

Assessment is probably the strongest driver of education and the most significant obstacle to change. While high stakes testing focuses on low order skills, an emphasis on recall of knowledge and learned strategies for responding to predominantly content based questions progress will be stifled. Open a dialogue with teachers about the need to teach dispositions and it will not be long before someone says “That’s all very good, but I need to get my students ready for the test”.

One thing that is missed is the role of teachers. I agree that we need goals, parental engagement, and developing skills (or as John Dewey called them habits). The article points a finger at teachers as if the only way to teach creatively is to hold teachers externally accountable. The truth is, when we treat teachers that way, we deny them their creative practices to engage in the change.

At this time, blogging assists students to become more ICT literate which is a crucial 21st century skill. Through blogging, we’re able to incidentally discuss many ICT skills such as keyboard shortcuts, Creative Commons, researching online and troubleshooting. Creating a class blog requires teamwork and collaboration. Students and teachers learn and share together. A real sense of classroom community can be developed through blogging and establishing a class identity Also, with this we can create an authentic audience, In the traditional classroom, the only audience of student work was the teacher and sometimes classmates and parents. Blogs provide a much larger audience for student work and an opportunity for feedback and self-improvement through commenting. I have found that students really take pride in the work that goes on the blog and want to do their best for their impending audience. In fact, is important to take into a consideration that the use of a blog increased motivation for writing, all students are happy to write and complete aspects of the post topic. Many will add to it in their own time. As well, improved the reading skill. Blogging is a great technique to introduce the technology into the classroom. Additionally, there are so many online tools out there which have more assessment when you can implant them in a blog. Blogging can provide a really different learning stage and while it takes a lot of work.
