Postman (1931-2003): Amusing ourselves to death

Postman (1931-2003): Amusing ourselves to death | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

Where Postman fails is in carrying this critique over to new asynchronous media such as YouTube and iTunes has solved this problem, by replacing the idea of the half-hour or one hour programmes, whose length, like the one hour lecture, is designed for scheduling rather than learning. YouTube has shown us that video content needs to be as long as it needs to be, the shorter the better, in line with the maxim that, in learning, less is more.

The Future of E-Learning

The Future of E-Learning | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
Twenty-five years ago when I created custom presentations using Harvard Graphics (pre PowerPoint) I thought that one day people will know how easy this is and I’ll be out of work. Today, close to three decades later, not much has changed. Sure we’ve got a lot of cool technologies and all of that. But the presentations and the courses are still mostly the same quality (for good or bad).
Nik Peachey's insight:

We need more teachers with instructional / learning design skills.

A Discussion about Learning in the Classroom

A Discussion about Learning in the Classroom | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
I recently had an important conversation with my students. It’s probably not a dialogue they’ve had before, and to be honest, it’s not one I’ve had with students before this semester, either. The questions asked are simple, but the answers are somewhat abstract and require some real thought. This exercise was quite powerful and will hopefully positively impact how my students think about learning, class, and studying/practicing.

Interesting article, despite the picture.

IT skills gap: the industry forecast

IT skills gap: the industry forecast | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it
Today’s young people and students are digital natives — let’s face it, they have been surrounded by technology since birth. That said, this familiarity doesn’t necessarily mean that they possess an in-depth understanding of IT and computing, or how to use it within a business setting. In fact, when it comes to how many people receive a formal technical education, the UK’s students are placed 16 out of 20 across developed economies.

I guess this also applies in mamny other countries too.

Digital Learning Platforms vs Proceses

Digital Learning Platforms vs Proceses | Learning Technology News | Scoop.it

As digital learning technologies continue to grow and develop at pace we need to match that development with an ever deeper understanding about how we connect the right tools to the specific learning need. Any money spent on a scalable learning technology that doesn’t meet the learning needs is still money wasted, however ‘cost effective’ the cost-to-learner ratio is.

Nik Peachey's insight:

Bit promotional at the end but a solid argument.

AI coaching apps may still be a novelty, but that’s likely to change as the smaller startups prove themselves to customers, investors and the companies that may one day acquire them.
