What Happens When Students Use Technology Better Than Teachers? - TeachThought

What Happens When Students Use Technology Better Than Teachers? - TeachThought | Learning Technologies | Scoop.it

"You know the content, you understand pedagogy, and you can navigate the minefield of diplomacy when dealing with parents, students, administrators, literacy coaches, and the local news station when they want to see the iPads glow on the students faces.

You know how to manage and coddle, inspire and organize, assess and deliver content.

But the technology is different. That part you do okay with, but, truth be told, the students are geniuses with technology. Born hackers. And of course they are, you tell yourself.

They’re digital natives."

Hmmm.. something every teacher should look out for

Ivon Prefontaine, PhD's curator insight, February 19, 2014 8:12 PM

I think, to some extent, this sometimes overstated. There are students who won''t  listen for a variety of reasons. That has always been the case. I found that most students are willing to learn. I am sitting in a university library with some digital natives. Most of them are here to learn and it shows.

Wonderful Visual on SAMR As A Framework for Education 3.0 ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

Wonderful Visual on SAMR As A Framework for Education 3.0 ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Learning Technologies | Scoop.it

"Proponents of the sociolinguistic perspective to the study of literacy ( e.g.Paul Gee, Collin Lanksheare, Michelle Knobel, Brian Street, to mention but a few ) view the developments of literacy and with it education as a direct result to the sophistication of the social and cultural aspect of human life. Some of them like Collin and Michelle associate the evolution of education to that of the web and hence the nomenclature education 1.0 (related web 1.0), education 2.0 ( related to web 2.0), and education (3.0 related to web 3.0). This association, however is not haphazard for there are many commonalities between each pair."

Making Math Thinking Visible with iPads - Primary Preoccupation

Making Math Thinking Visible with iPads - Primary Preoccupation | Learning Technologies | Scoop.it

"My students create many different artifacts, but the most meaningful are those in which my students show their learning and their thinking in ways that are far beyond what a worksheet could do.  When they make a video or screencast of what they have learned, I can hear and see their thinking. I can also hear confidence or hesitation, self-corrections or errors in perception. Consider these math examples produced by my students."

Now that's  talking ! Specially  as it gives a door into the child's head.  This should also be pursued by analyzing writing for the same purpose. Reading ability has always taken centre stage. Putting the focus on writing is more logical .

This is a fine post from  Karla Gutierrez on Shift's E-Learning Blog. It's far more than an inforgraphic. You'll find a design glossary hyperlinked to additional resources.  Think of this as an inforgraphic sitting on top of buried treasure.  Worth digging into!

Using Social Media to Teach Visual Literacy in the 21st Century Classroom

Using Social Media to Teach Visual Literacy in the 21st Century Classroom | Learning Technologies | Scoop.it

That we have evolved our favorite forms of communication is obvious without more than simply watching our students walk through the hallways. It would be easy to demonize social media and each medium that it provides for human interaction. But it would be educationally valuable to embrace it, turning it into an opportunity for our students to develop an appreciation for the advanced cognitive skills they employ on a daily basis. Why not study the highly visual communication models connecting the thoughts that mean the most to them with the social networks where they live their lives?

Visual literacy matters

Visual literacy is the ability to:

  1. Process and make meaning of information presented in an image.
  2. Communicate our own ideas through principles of design.
  3. Create our own messages that capture our visual thinking in a way that conceptualizes problems to given solutions.
