Space Matters: Lessons Learned from an Active-Learning Classroom | EdSurge News

Too many discussions of edtech focus on tools (like tablets, clickers, learning-management systems, smart boards, etc). More thought should be spent on the design of the classroom itself.

Two years ago we renovated an old computer lab into an active learning classroom. The idea was to make the room, Carson 61, into an incubator—to spark similar classroom redesigns all over campus.

Faculty Offices As Learning Spaces – Science Edventures

Faculty Offices As Learning Spaces – Science Edventures | Learning spaces and environments | Scoop.it
Robert’s particular take on these rights is how the physical learning space can promote (but more often, restrict) these rights. Simple example: in classrooms where the seats have built-in tablets, left-handed people have to sit in special lefty-seats, usually along an aisle or against the wall. They can’t sit with their peers and can’t choose to be inconspicuous in the middle of a big block of seats.

The Classroom Of 2028 Will Look Like The Classroom Of 2018

The Classroom Of 2028 Will Look Like The Classroom Of 2018 | Learning spaces and environments | Scoop.it
There’s a focus today in the education world to provide students with a serious return on investment by properly preparing them for the workforce, but consider for a moment the staggering statistic that 85% of jobs that will exist in 2030 haven’t been invented yet. Of course, it’s going to be critical to continue to make sure that students are gaining practical, employable skills over the course of their degrees. However, there needs to be an equal focus on preparing these individuals with adaptable and transferable skills. In essence, we need to teach folks how to learn.

I've said this before, architects should be forced to live in the buildings they design for a year and see how they really work before designing another building. Or alternatively they could read Educause's 'Learning Spaces' edited by their past president Diana G. Oblinger, a wonderful free resource with great evidence based learning designed spaces.
