FileMaker API Integration: How to Interpret an API: From start to working code

This DevCon presentation is the one I've been waiting for: Salvatore Colangelo's presentation on connecting FileMaker to an API.

Colangelo uses the metaphor of a recipe in his presentation, and the same recipe is followed every time you want to connect to an API:

  • Understand the Authentication
  • Identify the Endpoints and the HTTP Methods
  • Construct the Body parameters and the HTTP Headers
  • Submit the request
  • Parse the response and the HTTP Headers

Free FileMaker Downloadable File

This video is packed with useful information, and don't miss the free download file and blog post with explicit instructions for connecting to Amazon services, something that is hard to figure out.

FileMaker DevCon 2017 - A First-Timer's Guide | Soliant Consulting | Learning FileMaker | Scoop.it
In a little under two weeks, over 1,000 FileMaker developers and users will ignore Mr. Truman’s advice and head directly into the kitchen that is FileMaker DevCon in Phoenix, AZ, where they will experience the heat literally and figuratively.

Together, we will bake in the sun and in FileMaker and soak up as much as we can of each.

It will be an exciting time.

If this is your first time in the figurative heat of FileMaker DevCon, let me recommend a few preparations to take to finish the week with a nice tan, but no sun burn or heatstroke.

In July of 2016, Matt was afforded the opportunity to present as a speaker at the annual FileMaker Developer's Conference.

FileMaker Inc. decided to make the release of the session videos available for the general public.

The session was well received with high marks given all around.

The session was a jam-packed roundup all the various things you can do with FileMaker layout objects in order to meet the objective of creating designs which work well within a small form factor.

If taking advantage of FileMaker Go's highly portable convenience is one of your personal objectives, then set aside an hour of time and watch this video.

If you're looking for the sample file provided, then the link is provided below and within the video itself as well.

FileMaker DEVCON 2016 Preview: INN001 - FileMaker Go and iOS Apps: One-Step Integration

Cris Ippolite Previews his Session and shows some of the demo files.

URL schemes allow you to communicate with many apps simply using URLs. For example, FileMaker’s “fmp:” scheme lets you run scripts in a hosted FileMaker file.

Using just the “Open URL” script step, we can use URL schemes to open iOS apps from within FileMaker Go — and even pass data! This session explores how URL schemes can extend the functionality of your FileMaker Go apps, achieving exciting interactions on iOS 9.

DevCon 2015: Data Modeling Beyond Anchor Buoy -... | FileMaker Community

Data modeling is a critical part of FileMaker development, and keeping an organized table occurrence graph is key to rapid and bug-free development.

Anchor Buoy (AB) is arguably the most widely adopted FileMaker development convention because it gives an excellent visual pattern and language for tackling this.

However, we want to make sure that a strict adherence to the AB pattern isn’t limiting our access to powerful tools in the platform.

We’ll look at some new pattern ideas like universal context and the selector-connector to see if we can keep the organizational benefits of AB while unlocking all the power the graph has to offer.

What Works | FileMaker tip - Video - SeedCode | Learning FileMaker | Scoop.it

This series started as a few posts on our internal blog and eventually became my (FileMaker) DevCon 2017 session, What Works – Increasing Code Quality While Staying Lean.

I started these when we were bringing on a new employee and felt the need to document some of the reasons we were successful.

With so much interest in the DevCon session, we’re now making the original posts public: this will be the first of four.

These tactics have made a big difference for SeedCode and I hope you find them useful.

What is SSL and Why Do You Need It for Your FileMaker Deployment?

What is SSL and Why Do You Need It for Your FileMaker Deployment? | Learning FileMaker | Scoop.it

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a critical part of security, but many FileMaker developers don't know much about it.

We all use it, probably every day, but most of us have not had to set it up or really understand how it actually works.

Maybe we think of it as some sort of voodoo that happens behind the scene, and as a user, that's fine; there's no need to understand it any more than that.

But as a developer or a server administrator who has to set it up, it can be helpful to know a bit more about how it works.

I’ve invested some time learning about SSL and even presented a session at the 2017 FileMaker DevCon called "Demystifying SSL."
