Deleting Files from Your Computer Using Native FileMaker Pro

Deleting Files from Your Computer Using Native FileMaker Pro | Learning FileMaker | Scoop.it
Why would you want to delete files in the Finder from FileMaker Pro?

I had a request to build a simple document management system using a Fujitsu scanner to bring PDF files into FileMaker.

I have talked about some of the issues with scanners and FileMaker in a previous blog post, — there is no really great way to have the scanner files go straight to FileMaker Pro, so my idea was to keep things relatively simple and have the user scan to a set folder on their computer and then run a FileMaker script to import from a that folder location.

Once the files are imported into FileMaker, the files are removed from the user’s ‘Scanner Document’ folder on the Desktop of their computer.

This is a fairly simple technique using only standard FileMaker Pro capabilities, without the use of plugins or AppleScript to delete files from anywhere on your computer.

This is a powerful technique, so please use it with caution.

Creating complex documents the easy way | FileMaker tip - Michael Rocharde

Creating complex documents the easy way | FileMaker tip - Michael Rocharde | Learning FileMaker | Scoop.it
Businesses all over the world and of every size and type spend countless hours every day typing the same thing over again.

Contracts and legal documents are classic examples of this.

The tools of choice are word processors and spreadsheets, every one of which is an individual document that has to be filed using a complex hierarchical filing system designed so that any document can be, relatively, easily retrieved.

Copying and pasting, from one document to another is commonplace but often it is easier to just type something again than find it in another document.

But why would any business or person want to type the same thing over and over again.

Apart from the time wasted, and time is the most valuable commodity any of us has, it is frustrating and fraught with errors, not only spelling ones but inconsistency because somebody wasn’t paying attention.

The reason that businesses do this and use Microsoft Word or Excel is that they simply do not know there is a better way of doing things but there is.

It’s called FileMaker and is the most powerful tool for business that you’ve probably never heard of.

Modular Programming with FileMaker Card Windows

Modular Programming with FileMaker Card Windows | Learning FileMaker | Scoop.it

LET’S PLAY CARDS!

The Card Window was introduced in FileMaker 16. We learned some pretty cool development techniques and use cases for Card Windows during one of the breakout sessions we attended during DevCon 2018.

TRANSACTIONS

Card Windows can be a great tool for transactional programming. You can easily arrange for transactional events to either pass or fail, meaning all edits/adds/deletes that happen during the transaction are either committed or not. Cards can be leveraged to guide the user through a process, storing the data via global fields, variables or JSON arrays along the way. Ultimately, the data will only be committed if the user completes all of the steps. Incidentally, you can also use slide panels to create this user experience.

Learn new ways to unlock actionable insights with analytical capabilities that spreadsheets just can’t offer.

For many, Excel is the go-to analysis tool of choice.

As useful as it can be, for delivering real insight from big data, spreadsheets simply won’t provide all of the answers you seek.

If you're trying to use spreadsheets for large volumes of data or advanced analysis, you've got the wrong tool for the job.

Too often, mistakes are made at the expense of efficiency, accuracy and hours of lost time.

In today’s marketplace, the basic, built-in charts and graphs are just table stakes, and the real data wins are found in multiple types of advanced visuals.

Is Your Business Ready for the GDPR? | FileMaker tip | Learning FileMaker | Scoop.it

Is your business ready for the GDPR?

Does it need to be?

On May 25, 2018, the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will go into effect in the EU.

The GDPR introduces some of the strongest protection for personal information in the world.

It replaces the previous regulation (Directive 95/46/EC), introducing more stringent data protection rules, unifying things to help make compliance is easier, and making updates to keep up with over a decade of technology advancements.

Encrypting Files in FileMaker 17

If you are creating a database, especially for your business, then you probably have sensitive data that you need to store in it.

It doesn’t matter if it’s client information, or patient data, or financial information, you won’t want outsiders accessing it.

FileMaker already has tools that allow you to do that – user accounts, privilege sets, extended privileges, etc.

FileMaker 17 gives you another tool for securing your data – it allows you to encrypt your database files using AES 256 bit encryption.
