50 STEM Books to Update Your Collection - We Are Teachers

50 STEM Books to Update Your Collection - We Are Teachers | Learning Apps | Scoop.it
STEM books are finally getting a chance to shine in schools as educators increasingly shift their focus towards incorporating more science, technology, engineering, and math into their classrooms. The biggest challenge is deciding which STEM books to include in classroom and school libraries.

An educator asked our WeAreTeachers HELPLINE for advice about adding STEM books to her school’s library collection. She wrote, “I am a K–8 librarian media specialist. This is my second year on the job, and I’m trying to update large sections of our school library. Our collection of nonfiction books is sorely lacking. Some of the books are 20 years older than me! Are there any STEM-related books that our library must have? I’d love any suggestions! Thanks so much!”

With a little help from the educators in our WeAreTeachers Facebook group and our friends at Penguin Young Readers, we put together an extensive list of 50 modern STEM-themed books that your classroom or school library simply shouldn’t do without. Plus get a printable STEM book list that organizes many of these titles (plus more!) by specific theme (science, technology, engineering, or math) and recommended grade level—a great resource for building your classroom or school library!

17 Little-Known Tips, Tricks and Hacks for Using Google in the Classroom | EdSurge News | Learning Apps | Scoop.it
Here’s a slightly Orwellian way to check whether your students may have plagiarized part of their essays: the Chrome extension Draftback, which plays back the revision history of any Google doc you can edit—down to the keystroke.

That was just one of the many extensions, add-ons and hacks for the Google ecosystem shared at a pair of sessions packed to the rafters at the Spring CUE 2018 conference in Palm Springs, Calif.

Making and Designing Art with Digital Technology | FabLearn Fellows

Making and Designing Art with Digital Technology | FabLearn Fellows | Learning Apps | Scoop.it
Learning by doing, has been a cornerstone of progressive education with roots dating to the 18th century. In the United States, the Progressive Education movement, through the work of John Dewey, as well as other education philosophers like Jean Piaget, have advocated for learning through experience. Seymour Papert expanded this idea through his learning theory of Constructionism. People learn best through creating and sharing the things they make. Every time we make art, our material, whether it is clay, cardboard, or computer code, is used to form ideas and bring them into the world.

Art is the verb, the action, the making. Our materials are physical, digital, or both.

Get Free Kids' Coloring Pages Using Google Images

Get Free Kids' Coloring Pages Using Google Images | Learning Apps | Scoop.it
Psssst. Want to make your kid think you’re a sorcerer? I’ve got a trick.

First, you will need a magical machine called a printer. Then when the child is near your computer, ask, “Hey, what would you like to color right now? It can be anything. Your favorite character? Spain during the Cold War? A hot dog?” Your kid might respond with skepticism, but tell him to trust you. Then do a Google image search of his selection, and under Tools, click “Type,” and select “Line drawing.” Choose a high-resolution image, print it out, and hand it to your child with some crayons.

This is interesting! But it's good to add the usage rights -- Non-commercial with reuse or modifications and then try it. And also, maybe be ready for maybe inappropriate stuff to show up - or make sure SAFE SEARCH FILTER is on -- because you know! A search for hotdog could possibly bring up stuff + fandom drawings can be racy.
