25 Tablet Idea to Enhance Learning Experiences - Getting Smart | Learning With Social Media Tools & Mobile | Scoop.it
How cool would it have been to be able to draw, write, and learn directly onto my own computer? As the years went on, people theorized that laptops would take over the classroom, but the price of these devices was too high for a 1 to 1 ratio.

For the Future Student, Higher Education Will Be Redefined

For the Future Student, Higher Education Will Be Redefined | Learning With Social Media Tools & Mobile | Scoop.it
Not too far in the future, students may be faced with an entirely different set of choices than they do today. No longer may a four-to-six-year commitment to a highly esteemed institution be the fastest way to a fruitful career or a rich network. With online education quickly gaining momentum, the emergence of massive open online courses (MOOCs) is not only shaking up higher education to the core — its value, its status, its cost — the movement is also changing how young people envision their education and their future.

What Happened in Ed Tech in 2012? - Online Universities.com

What Happened in Ed Tech in 2012? - Online Universities.com | Learning With Social Media Tools & Mobile | Scoop.it

10 The Rise of the Education Entrepreneur – This has been, perhaps, the most striking change in the education sector in the past year. As Audrey correctly predicted, there has been a dramatic rise in those looking to invest in (and cash in on) the future of education. It seems like everyone is an education consultant or has their own education start-up (or maybe it’s the circles I travel in?). What is surprising is how many of these new entrepreneurial types are or were teachers. For me, this is one of the great hopes for education. That educators can leverage their own knowledge and power and both convey that entrepreneurial spirit to their students and leverage it tofortify the future of funding for education. If society isn’t going to do it for them, perhaps it’s time for teachers to do it for themselves?

After the initial announcement of Harvard and MIT’s collaborative learning platform, edX, earlier this year, I speculated that it might have several things to teach the world about e-learning and education in general. Chronicle reporter Marc Parry recently visited the edX office on the MIT campus and uncovered the actual facts behind the developing research agenda at edX. Here is a look at what the researchers at MIT and Harvard intend to investigate and an evaluation of the evolving edX agenda.

An insider's guide: what it's really like to study a MOOC | Learning With Social Media Tools & Mobile | Scoop.it
While the academic commentariat has been debating the challenges and opportunities of MOOCs, not many have looked at the first-person experiences of students.

As an empirical researcher, and having studied at four Australian universities, some of which pride themselves on their online and distance courses, I thought I’d enroll in a MOOC to gain a student perspective.

for the love of learning: Learning hasn't changed

Learning is a field that is very trendy. There is always the latest greatest that everyone must do. Today this is “social learning” and “on the job learning.”

There is one problem with this. None of this stuff is ever new in any way. Learning hasn't changed in a million years. Did I say a million? Too conservative. How do chimp babies learn? Socially? Of course. They copy what their mothers do and what their playmates do. (Amazingly they do this without Facebook.)

The flipped academic: turning higher education on its head

The flipped academic: turning higher education on its head | Learning With Social Media Tools & Mobile | Scoop.it
Education models are turning inside out. First came the concept of the 'flipped classroom' in schools: pupils completing course material ahead of lessons to free up time with their teachers and apply the knowledge they have just learned. Now a related philosophy is developing in higher education. Can we also flip academics – or even academia itself?

Alex Bruton, associate professor in innovation and entrepreneurship at Mount Royal University in Canada, thinks so. The 'flipped academic', as he sees it, is an academic who informs first and publishes later, seeking usefulness as well as truth in their research and striving to publish only after having had an impact on students and society.

Mike Truong's curator insight, December 11, 2012 12:06 PM

I love the idea of the flipped academic, "publish only after having had an impact on students and society."  Our current model allows so much stuff to be published that doesn't really have any impact on students or society.  It reminds me of the idea of action research.

UmeaMan's comment, December 11, 2012 8:15 PM
I love the flipped model and I try to introduce it into Chinese K-12 settings, to help headteachers and teachers to implement it.But I found that there are a lot obstacles: such as change courages of teachers, teachers'competencies to create online videos, students' self-regulation etc. Do you have any suggestions and advices? Thanx.
