The Flipped, Flipped Classroom

The past years have witnessed the apparition of one of the largest educational revolutions of our time: many prognosticators trumpet how MOOCs and flipped classroom models are one of the most promising educational approaches of the last century. From every walk of life, individuals ranging from politicians to teachers to venture capitalists seem to be thrilled by the new doors opened by those innovations.

Paradoxically, those so-called “innovations” are incorporating none of the educational research produced over the past decades.

The university student population in Australia contains increasing numbers of older students returning to learning after a significant gap in their educational journey. Many are choosing to enrol online to combine their studies with other time-consuming responsibilities. This article examines the nature of this online student experience with a focus on those aged 25 and over who are the first in their families to embark on university studies. A Comparison of the Effectiveness of Two Computer-Based Learning Aids. By Piers D L Howe, @jasonmlodge & Meredith McKague.

Instructors are increasingly using computer-based educational technologies to augment their courses. As answering quizzes has been shown to be one of the most effective learning strategies, a growing number of computer-based learning aids use quizzing. So which of these learning aids should instructors recommend to their students? These learning aids typically either present the student with a number of potential answers and require that they recognise the correct answer (i.e. a multiple-choice quiz) or else they might the student to recall the answer without assistance (i.e. a free recall quiz). Numerous lab-based studies have shown that recall-based quizzes promote more learning and result in higher performance in a subsequent exam/test than recognition-based quizzes. In the present study, we investigated to what extent this finding holds in an actual university setting with two commercially-available learning aids. We found that while both types of learning aid proved to be effective, we could find no evidence that the recall-based learning aid was more effective than the recognition-based learning aid. In light of this, we discuss possible reasons why the laboratory findings did not readily translate into an actual university setting and make practical recommendations for what sort of computer-based learning aid instructors could incorporate into their university courses.

Why do flipped classrooms sometimes flop? - Blackboard Blog

Why do flipped classrooms sometimes flop? - Blackboard Blog | Learning and Teaching in an Online Environment | Scoop.it
Flipped learning classroom (FLC) approaches continue to gain traction across educational institutions. A flipped classroom represents an inversion of traditional lecture and tutorial-based delivery modes. That is, lecture content is delivered ahead of time so that classes can focus on exploring and applying concepts and content alongside rich opportunities for review and formative assessment and feedback.

This blog post was inspired by a conversation, and later an interview, with a first-year student who experienced a highly successful flipped classroom in first semester and then a major flop in the second one. The interview used six framing questions to understand why her flipped classroom ‘flopped’ and what characterised a successful flipped classroom from her perspective.

5 Misconceptions About Online Program Management Providers

5 Misconceptions About Online Program Management Providers | Learning and Teaching in an Online Environment | Scoop.it

What do you think of the online program management (OPM) industry?

If you are like many higher ed people that I speak with, your answer may not be all that positive. Higher ed people simply don’t like the idea of long contract lock-ins (usually between five and 10 years) and revenue share arrangements that send half to three-quarters of tuition dollars to for-profit companies.

Is it possible to be a critical and clear-eyed observer of the OPM industry and still believe that an OPM partnership should be on the table as institutions consider new online programs? I think the answer is yes, as I’ve come to believe that (a) the OPM industry is more complicated and nuanced than we often think, and (b) we need to think about OPM partnerships in a different way.
