San Francisco group seeks Children's Outdoor Bill of Rights

San Francisco group seeks Children's Outdoor Bill of Rights | Learning about Environmental Ed | Scoop.it
A group of San Francisco nature enthusiasts want to pass a Children's Outdoor Bill of Rights.
Sonia Thomas's insight:

Can you think of ten things that every child should experience outdoors? A group of people did just that and created a Bill of Rights for children in the San Francisco area. Some of the children and adults the author met had never been to the beach, even though the area is surrounded on three sides by water. An inspiring idea to advocate for.

Elmhurst school gets different kind of classroom

Elmhurst school gets different kind of classroom | Learning about Environmental Ed | Scoop.it
The newest classroom at Hawthorne Elementary School in Elmhurst is like all other classrooms — at least in some ways.
Sonia Thomas's insight:

What an exciting opportunity to learn outdoors! This classroom will allow students to be immersed in their learning about nature. Acivities planned include growing a garden, learning about conservation and recycling. Cool instructional materials include, "a weather station, a rain garden, rain barrel, vegetables growing in fabric pouches on the walls and a three-compartment composting bin". I would have loved this for my kids when they were young.

Grow a Salad! Preschoolers Plant and Prepare Their Food | NAEYC TYC | Teaching Young Children Magazine

Grow a Salad! Preschoolers Plant and Prepare Their Food | NAEYC TYC | Teaching Young Children Magazine | Learning about Environmental Ed | Scoop.it

Preschoolers might think that their lunch comes from opening the fridge or going to the supermarket. They don't fully understand the long journey that much of our food travels as it grows from seeds planted in the ground to being presented at the table. We noticed that many of the ingredients in a salad lend themselves well to growing in a classroom garden. So we decided to show the preschoolers at The Earth School where fresh food really comes from.

Sonia Thomas's insight:

Environmental education in action! Children love to see their plants grow each day. They learn about biology of a plant- the need for sunlight and water. They learn what happens when pollution is introduced into the environment. Teachers can add nutrition information to the activity. Research has indicated that children are more likely to want to try new foods when they are involved in choosing and growing them.
