Curation: Creatively Filtering Content

Curation: Creatively Filtering Content | Learner Management Tools | Scoop.it
“Curation is a life skill and an important part of being digitally literate. Educators need to know how to curate information so they can teach students how they can curate content for research, their interests and passion. Aparna Nagaraj's curator insight, August 29, 2014 10:30 AM

You come across a lot of stuff, find some of them valuable, find value in some parts, and you see connections between the different stuff you come across. You curate by filtering, extracting, and bringing out the connection between the stuff you find, and this curated new stuff becomes more valuable than those already shared stuff that you found. Valuable enough to be shared to others who are looking for similar stuff as you are.

Kelly Christopherson's curator insight, August 20, 2014 2:37 PM

I like the idea of being able to insert questions and comments into videos that will be used with students, either large group or individual. It provides for formative quick checks to ensure students are on track and can generate discussions amongst groups or with the whole class. I also think that, giving students this option, they could create reactions by asking questions and direct their own learning through adding questions or comments to what they are viewing.

Here's the latest research on needed leadership skills -- and storytelling is the way to achieve results for #1, 2, 5, 7, 10, 13, 14, and 16.

This covers inspiring and motivating others, displaying integrity/honesty, building relationship, developing others, championing change, connecting the company to the outside world, and practicing self development.

Stories play a role in all of these. Yes, who knew? It's all about knowing what stories to tell when, how to tell them effectively, how to listen for stories, and how to foster both engagement and achieving goals through stories.

Now stories won't cure everything. But storytelling (and all that involves) is a core competency for leaders.

Enjoy reading all about the research and findings. It's a short article.

This post, by Alan November, ask six question that help districts help "clarify for educators the unique added value of a digital learning environment, and whether their assignments were making the best use of this environment.

November believes that innovation is critical, and shares his perspective that technology needs to move beyond the ability to function and move the school community (teachers, staff and students) to be more innovative, which requires that the "design of learning" that will lead to new levels of student achievement.

The six questions he raises are below:

1.  Did the assignment build capacity for critical thinking on the web?

2.  Did the assignment develop new lines of inquiry?

3.  Are there opportunities for students to make their thinking visible?

4.  Are there opportunities to broaden the perspective of the conversation with authentic audiences from around the world?

5.  Is there an opportunity for students to create a contribution (purposeful work)?

6.  Does the assignment demo “best in the world” examples of content and skill?

Additional information is included with each question in the post. How would you score your school or district?
