This article (4 pages and easy to read) explains how levelled production is an essential enabler for moving to production flow and becoming truly lean.  It introduces the 5 step process by which Toyota progressively developed production levelling, and focuses on the first step.  The first step was to create a fixed production schedule which provided 'economies of repetition', creating improvements in quality and productivity.  The Glenday Sieve is explained as a tool to separate products into groups based on sales volume & then approach scheduling and improvement by group. It also looks at the impact of demand variability as a percentage of product volume.
