The Principal's Role in New Teacher Induction

The Principal's Role in New Teacher Induction | Leading for Learning | Scoop.it

Each time a teacher resigns, the hiring process must begin anew. While veteran teachers lament or applaud the loss of a colleague, the building principal posts a job opening and assembles a hiring team in hopes of securing the most able candidate. As summer fades and the new school year approaches, veteran staff members will join forces with the principal to orient the replacement, assign a mentor, and shuffle scarce resources so that the newcomer feels welcomed and equipped to start the year. If everything goes well, the new teacher will eventually become a full and contributing member of the staff. But in too many cases, the newcomer will resign in the next year or two, and the scenario will repeat itself.

Great information about new teacher induction. Some useful key concepts that highly effective principles do when inducting new teachers.

Ben Bempong's curator insight, July 30, 2015 2:39 PM

This is cool that veteran staff members will join forces with principals to select new teachers.  What I don't like about this article is the fact that the retention of teachers aren't consistent year to year.

Paige Paul's curator insight, September 15, 2015 9:10 PM

Topic 2: I posted this excerpt because it reflects some of the issues with hiring and retention that I have observed over the last six years at my current school.  Teacher retention is such an important issue, and proper mentoring and support for new teachers can help to aleviate the issue.

Culture’s Critical Role in Change Management

Culture’s Critical Role in Change Management | Leading for Learning | Scoop.it
A new survey shows that when executives fail to focus on culture, their change initiatives founder.

...it is easier to act your way into a new way of thinking than it is to think your way into a new way of acting.

  ________________________________

Excerpted:  ....those who work with and within their existing culture to change critical behaviors have more success than those who try to change their culture.

Said another way, it is easier to act your way into a new way of thinking than it is to think your way into a new way of acting.

....Overall, change initiatives are only adopted and sustained about half the time, our survey shows. But when companies tap into the energy and emotional commitment that are bound up in their cultures, change initiatives are far more sustainable.

Dr Pam Hill's insight:

Culture is also important in school districts and school buildings.  It's essential that leaders understand how to bring about long lasting change through the development of a culture that supports the evolution of learning practices!
